Product Description

Product Description

The Marathon des Sables is widely regarded as the toughtest footrace on Earth. It is a seven-day, multi-stage race in the Moroccan Sahara, during which competitors must carry all their food, clothing and equipment across the ~150-mile course.

From the Publisher

The Marathon des Sables was Mark Hines' first excursion into the world of ultra-endurance adventure races. With a background far removed from endurance fitness, this book catalogues his training, preparation and participation in his first great race. Whilst the subsequent titles on the Jungle Marathon and Yukon Arctic Ultra clearly demonstrate his own evolution into an accomplished runner, the Marathon des Sables was where it all began. His training was unrefined and the equipment he chose far from the best, but this new reflective edition permits Mark to put into context all the decisions he made, and within the appendix can be found his true 'desired kit list' for such an event. Calling on his background as an exercise physiologist, Mark easily explains the adaptations involved in training for an ultra-endurance event. This culminates in an in-depth analysis of the 'athlete's heart', which is introduced within the main text but features in its entirety in the appendix. This chapter alone should be considered a must-read for anyone preparing to begin training to become an endurance runner. The Marathon des Sables is an incredible race, described in this book through the eyes of a novice racer, but one with an academic background that balances well with his natural approach to training.

A struggle to read 28 April 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this book as one of the first things I did in my MdS preparation and although there are useful bits and pieces in here I must admit that it is a rather boring read. If all you are looking for is information about MdS then stick to the various websites and try to find an MdS veteran to ask all your questions instead. A much better alternative is to do one of the many MdS training camps available.

I struggled to understand where Mark was going with this book
. If you want an In depth look at training and equipment then look elsewhere .
Mark touched on the subject of eating foods and how the body absorbs them., but just as I was getting into that hechanged direction .personally I wish Mark had given me much more info on this plus equipment and training . He spent far to much time covering his time In London and his jobs . Then again I also wish he had given more to the characters he shared I'n his tent . This is where I could not understand where the book was going .it read like a novel in places , and to his credit enjoyed the yarn ..

Overall. I read it all and enjoyed it .

Great read
I am running the MDS in 2013 and this has been a very useful insight into what it takes to train for (and finish) the race
