Book Description

12 Nov 2007
The popularity of the marathon and half marathon has increased dramatically in recent years as growing numbers of people have become aware of the life-changing experiences and the health benefits that result from training for, and competing in, a 13.1 - or 26.2 - mile race. Notwithstanding this, marathons and half marathons are extremely testing endurance races and entrants need to be properly informed so that they can train and prepare in an appropriate way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous reference book 29 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
This is the best running training book I have come across. It doesn't just apply to marathons - could easily apply to 10k's as well. Chapters are all well laid out so you can simply jump to the section that is relevant to you. If you are worried about your knees or are wanting a really appropriate training regime this book has it all thought through for you. No myths or beating about the bush - it tells you how - or perhaps how not... you can get through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great North Run - Here i come!!! 28 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
Having been probably the laziest person on the planet for the last 15 years of my life, i decided last year that i had to set myself a challenge to lose some weight and achieve something i thought i'd never do - so i thought what better than enter the Great North Run! Like most here, i picked this book because it had great reviews - and i have to say i now know why! Its sympathetic to novice runners, really informative on all the main topics, amazing photos and all in all a great book to have by your bed or on the kitchen table. I don't want to tempt fate but so far i am virtually injury free, LOVING my running (theres something i thought i'd never say) and on target to finish the GNR without walking. I can't wait.
If you, like me, are a nervy newbie to the world of running and are thinking of running a half or full marathon - i'd strongly suggest you buy this book. I'd advise you to get others too, for variation more than anything, but out of all the books i have on running, this is the one i have used as my bible and dog eared the most.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic and motivational 5 April 2008
By MSR
Format:Paperback
I am pretty much a novice to running but, having put on too much weight after my two kids were born and wanting something to aim for I have signed up for a half marathon later this year. I bought this book hoping for practical advice which would enhance my understanding of how to train and what to expect along the way.
For me this book provides all this and much more. It is aimed at everyone, whether you're a seasoned runner or a complete beginner. It is extremely readable and covers all the main topics in clear language (although a note about whether or not to train through colds etc would be useful for future editions...) It is informative without being dictatorial in its tone, and I felt that the author was very 'tuned in' to most of the questions I would have asked him if I had the benefit of his company!
I'm also find reading the book really motivating - maybe because it's because it's such a practical, useful guide. He acknowledges the big challenges but makes you feel like you can overcome them.
It's early days for my training but it's going well - in no small part thanks to this book.
