Product Description

Review

• ‘The Map Of Time is a clever and engrossing 500-page yarn encompassing mystery, romance and murder. Just the sort of novel to see you through a holiday’ Daily Mail

• ‘A wonderful homage to the science fiction of the Victorian era, blending fact and fantasy into a mind-boggling tale that wrong-foots its readers at every twist and turn… an incredibly pacey read, and beautifully written’ Herald Scotland

• ‘A fast-paced, exuberant story of love, murder and charlatanry … For readers who enjoy the inconsistencies inherent in Dickens’ London, the randomness of Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Travellers’ Wife, and the clever humour of Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, this is an entertaining romp guaranteed to make you think and laugh and to keep you from your social life for hours’ Booklist (starred review)

• ‘The brilliant first in a trilogy, an intriguing thriller that explores the ramifications of time travel in three intersecting narratives… Palma brings Wells and other historical figures like Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man, plausibly to life. Susannah Clarke fans will be delighted’ Publishers Weekly(starred review)

• ‘A marvel from beginning to end…a masterpiece!’ Qué Leer [Spain]

Cracking release 8 Jun 2011
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
If you want a story that crosses multiple genres as well as giving the reader something different to a lot other books out there, then you really have to try this title by Felix Palma. It has great prose, cracking dialogue and characters that not only grow but hook you from the start with a suicidal chain of events that lead to the greater arc. Its cleverly done, its very inventive and with an omnipotent narrator it's a story that really is a cracking read.

Add to this that the title has already won awards and it hopefully should allay fears of a potentially bad financial transaction. Finally throw into the blend real historical characters, a touch of Victorian wonderment alongside some wonderful adaptations to events and the reader really does have a treat in store which makes this a cracking offering from Harper Collins.

Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
As others have mentioned, this is a very difficult book to review without giving away spoilers. The basic idea is can Andrew, a character who loses the woman he loves to Jack The Ripper, alter the course of time to save Marie and stop The Ripper. In Part 2 we meet Claire, a woman who feels trapped in her time and bored with her life who dreams of something her world just doesn't seem to offer. The story has the promise of a great love story, with the lure of time travel to add a different spin and the eeriness that only Victorian London can provide. However, the plot just gets lost in far too much detail and there were just a few too many twists and turns for me to feel like I truly engaged with the book and its characters. There were times that I just skimmed quite a few pages at once, just to skip over all the unnecessary detail and get to the point of what the author was trying to say. By the time I reached the end of part 2, it became a chore for me to pick up the book and read anymore - in fact if it hadn't have been a copy I was sent to review then I would have just put it down and moved on. I did manage to finish the book, and feel that if the author had condensed it down quite a lot then I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more. All the detail, jumping around and hearing the same time travel theories over and over again just didn't work for me.

Brilliant! 27 Aug 2011
By AR VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
It's difficult to describe the plot of this novel without giving too much away. It's set in Victorian London and is a rollercoaster ride of time travel, parallel universes, romance, murder and intrigue, featuring Jack the Ripper and novelists H.G. Wells, Bram Stoker and Henry James.

This is a lengthy book, written in three parts. Each is initially a separate story, but interweaving threads soon appear. Time travel is central to the novel and the author takes the reader on a fascinating and twisting journey - is time travel real or imagined, or just an elaborate parlour trick, the next step on from Victorian Spiritualism?

This is a clever book, with a narrator who is constantly winking at the reader. The author explores the idea of how people might affect the future by making small changes in the past, and uses real historical events and figures to illustrate this, which actually makes the story much more interesting.

H.G. Wells emerges after a while as the central character, who helps a variety of lovelorn folk with their dramatic romantic dilemmas, whilst also hunting down a vicious murderer. There are plenty of other well drawn characters: brave romantic heroes, rich dandies, swooning young girls eager for romance, tenacious police inspectors and wily, scheming criminals. In many ways this novel is typical of the Victorian potboiler with stereotypical characters and situations, but the author manages to elevate it greatly by his ingenious plotting and the introduction of sci-fi elements.

It took a few days to read due to the length of the book, but this is a really engaging story that I never wanted to put down. Highly recommended.
