Product Description

Review

"Sharply observed, very funny, and infused with the longings and possibilities of the road, it's a succulent tale." --"Wanderlust"

Book Description

An extraordinary book which ranks up there with Sandra Cisneros's Caramelo, Tim Butcher's Blood River and even the great Bruce Chatwin.

A charming tale 13 Nov 2011
By Nicola TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is the story of the author, Robin Bayley, following in his great-grandfather's footsteps and travelling to Mexico. Arthur Greenhalgh, or Arturo as he was called in Mexico, had travelled there at the end of the 19th century to run a cotton mill. Robin travelled there almost 100 years later to put flesh to the bones of the stories that his grandmother had told him about her father's time in Mexico.

This is a really charming and, at times, funny story. There's a quote on the front cover of the paperback from Who Do You Think You Are magazine, and it really is like something you would see on that programme, as the author uncovers various information and meets people connected to his family.

I found this an engrossing tale. I loved looking at the pictures in the centre, particularly those of Arthur, as they brought the characters to life for me. I'd recommend this to anybody who enjoys a good story of family life, particularly a true one. Excellent stuff.

I got this book for various reason but one of them was that I was intrigued about how a family history can affect our present and future and how certain things from our past live in our blood and we don't even realise it. this book, apart from being an amazing discovery with a travel theme, is a wonderful story of many people who love, hate, gain and lose. it's beautifully written. you don't even have to close your eyes to imagine you are there, in the ink of the writer. Enjoy! (I ended up buying it for my in-laws and friends' birthdays and they loved it too). alex, london

By Arthur
Format:Paperback
This is an extremely funny and beautifully written novel. Bayley weaves together an intriguing mixture of genealogy, travelogue and Mexican history but the result is so much more than the sum of its parts. Mexico is described with such detail and love that the reader feels he is alongside the author, enjoying the bizarre, chaotic and joyously colourful culture for themselves. With brilliantly realised characters, beautifully depicted scenery, a love story and a surprise ending the book has it all, except a sequel! More please Mr Bayley
