From the Author

I wrote this book having found myself in a profession with very mixed standards - at its best, consultancy adds huge value, but the worst consultants are, frankly, little better than charlatans. Consultancy can and should be value adding and well received by its clients. I set out to write the comprehensive guide to being a management consultant. How do you start? What services should you provide? How do you get work? How should you manage your engagements? What are the tips and pitfalls to avoid from experience? The book should appeal both to independent consultants and those working for a larger consulting organisation.

This is a highly readable and practical guide to Management Consulting, taken from a new perspective.
Although I am an experienced consultant, I found that this book was packed with useful information and approaches.
I will definitely be making this required reading for my team- both novice and experienced consultants.

Chapter 5 on Finding and Winning Work contains valuable advice for finding work and provides strategies that will be useful irrespective of the economic climate.

Brilliant read for the new or aspiring consultant - practical and to the point also a good read for the more experienced consultant in these challenging times!

If you skip pages and chapters don't miss chapter 13 - Seventeen pages of key consulting tips. The authors many years of experience in one chapter! Oh and don't forget chapter 14 - Eighteen pages of tips to the client just to keep us on our toes!

Finally, this book is dedicated to his son Konrad who didn't have a clue as to what he does for a living, so if you are in the same position - don't write a book, give them this one!

After many years of consulting I finally bit the bullet this year and established my own firm. This was one of a number of books that I thought I'd take a look at to see if there was anything I was missing... looking for that little bit of inspiration - I wish it'd been written 10 years ago... it knocks spots off the Management Consulting book I read in the nineties when I started!

For the novice consultant (either a junior-middle rank consultant in a firm or an experienced executive turning to consulting) - this book captures the essence of consulting in a structured way that will add to your capabilities and is quite likely to enhance your career - the way that you think about fulfilling your client obligations, the way you engage with clients (in projects and sales) or the way you structure propositions for both internal and external audiences

For the experienced/senior consultant and consulting leaders - I would be surprised if you (like me) didn't find things in this book that you'd forgotten or perhaps more likely it will serve as a dig in the ribs and point out those things you've stopped doing (or perhaps should stop doing)... those bad habits.

Thoroughly recommended!
