Book Description

A delightful series of short stories, providing a composite portrait of women and how the worlds they inhabit have changed over the past 50 years. No longer satisfied with marriage being their only socially acceptable destiny, these women relish their new freedoms as they run hospitals, banks and international businesses. From the spinsterish Miss Phipps, who opens the gate for women to fulfill their dreams and fantasies through her lending library, to the divorced 53-year-old Helen, who road-tests her internet date Dominic and becomes empowered by her new-found ability to make choices, these stories portray women who begin to overturn centuries of tradition, prepare to live fuller lives and to follow their dreams. Rosemary Friedman has a mimic’s ear for dialogue and her short stories are like well-aimed hand grenades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really satisfying bed-time stories for adults 21 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
As a child I always treasured my bedtime stories. I found reading Rosemary Friedman's pithy and well-written collection of interesting, perceptive observations (one or two per night) to be a very agreeable reminder of this love. Each story has a clear point and satisfying conclusion, though not always a happy ending, which I found extremely conducive to a good night's sleep.

These short stories were written over many years, and so the collection as a whole has a consequence, presumably unintended at the time of writing, that it acts as a reminder of forgotten social mores, tastes and attitudes of yesteryear, as well as illustrating how one good writer's style and use of language has developed in line with changes in social attitudes.

A wonderful bedtime read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Read, by A Great Author! 5 April 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I chose a full rating for The Man Who Understood Women by Rosemary Friedman, because her books are always good, and very well written, which is a must for me. I would recommend any of her books, as they are humorous, full of
good stories ( and jokes) and books so interesting you cannot put them down. She is a marvellous author, and I have all her books. She describes her characters so well, that you imagine they are real, and once I have finished any book,
I wish there was a sequel, so I could follow what the characters did afterwards. I just have to use my own imagination,
but that's probably what Rosemary wants you to do?
Well done for another amazing book by Rosemary Friedman.
