Amazon.co.uk Review

The Man Who Sued God defies simple definition, managing to be several types of movie all at the same time. As a theological-romantic-comedy-drama, it's in a somewhat unique category all of its own. Perhaps only Billy Connolly could carry off a central role that combines slapstick with raging anger, puppy-dog disappointment and strong language delivered in his distinctive accent. These facets of performance are used and abused in a tale that feels like it really ought to be based on a true story, but isn't.

Connolly's life as a fisherman is sunk by the destruction of his boat by a bolt of lightning. The insurance company won't pay up because it falls under that age-old excuse of being an "Act of God". So Connolly decides to sue the deity. The premise raises issues about how the law and the church have apparently conspired together. But at heart the film is a simple character study, so any pondering on legal or theological implications will have to be done on your own time; the screen is occupied with family issues, underhand dealings and a maybe-maybe romance with Judy Davis. Big Yin fans at least will enjoy the Connolly's composite character. --Paul Tonks

DVD Description

The Man Who Sued God is a boisterous romantic comedy about a man (Billy Connolly) who decides to sue God after his fishing boat is destroyed by lightning and his insurance company refuses to pay out, declaring it an act of God.

Billy at his Best. 16 Feb 2004
Format:DVD
This for me is Billy Connolly at his best. Bad language from the start - but what else can you expect, apart from brilliant acting. An excellent, imaginative and very thought provoking storyline. A must for all Billy Connolly fanatics and a must for all doubters of insurance companies. Highly funny, certainly one of the best i've seen in a while - great entertainment.

Well, admittedly the first time I watched it I thought the film itself wasn't the most riveting film I have watched, however Billy's performance is truly mesmerizing - Billy is exactly how you would expect him to behave in everyday public.

However I have since watched the film at least 8 more times in the space of 12 weeks and each time, I still thoroughly enjoy Billy. The film itself continues to grow on me and the storyline is cracking (this coming from a legal background!).

If you like Billy, buy it. If you aren't a huge fan, then rent it before buying it. It you are in a passing phase of Billy Connolly comedy, don't buy it because it will not meet your expectations of a great film.

Well Worth Watching 6 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Billy Connolly takes his out spoken wit to film. The film is a little far fetched but makes you think it could happen and then makes you think why has it not happened yet... Let's all sue god!!! It's an easy film to watch with no twists or turns but still well worth watching. Billy's character is all you'd expect, blunt, brash and very likeable. And the rest of the cast work well together. I would stongly recommend buying this movie or at least renting it out.

As a comedy it is well worth watching, it's crammed with subtle humour throughout; it's also enjoyable as a romance, again it's subtle, but it's steady and quite heartwarming,... Read more

The Man who sued God
One of the funniest films I have watched; not a classic but it brings out the best in BC's acting abilities.
It is a pity that he had to go to Australia in order to make it!

A disapointment!
The movie is indeed light-hearted and easy to watch but far from captivating and mostly predictive like any Hollywood movie you've ever seen. Read more
