Product Description

Dive in. Death is only a breath away, just when you thought it was safe. "The Mammoth Book of The Deep" presents 30 true-life stories of danger, endurance and adventure from this final frontier. Encounter great white sharks, the stricken Kursk submarine, gold salvagers, sponge divers, giant squid, the wreck of the Titanic, Navy frogmen, and bathyscopes in record-breaking descents. These riveting accounts range from the Red Sea to the South Pacific, from the North Atlantic to the Caribbean - and include contributions by names such as Jacques Cousteau, Hans Hasse, Peter Benchley, and, Tim 'Neutral Buoyancy' Ecott. This book includes: "Goldfinder": Keith Jessop - salvaging the gold cargo from HMS Edinburgh; "Black Water": Don Camsell - an SBS training operation aboard a mini-sub goes tragically wrong off the coast of Scotland; "A Time to Die": Robert Moore - the operation to rescue the trapped submariners of the Kursk; "Discovering the Titanic": Robert Ballard - the world's foremost wreck-hunter on the world's greatest wreck; "Descent": William Beebe - the record breaking descent in a bathysphere off Bermuda, 1934; and, "World Without Sun": Jacques Cousteau - the famous experiment in living for a month on the sea bed.

The book arrived in good condition. I have onlyead the first few pages, but so far so good. The opening is an informative time line of underwater adventure and exploration.

A Good Anthology 18 Mar 2008
By Alexander Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a wonderful nearly 500 page book featuring over 30 articles and excerpt writings from some of the world's great divers - including stories of mishaps from submariners and sailors, and an appendix on the history of diving.

Scuba diving attracts a fine calibre of people and this adventure book proves it. There are many words of experience and wisdom contained within; well-written with deep sensitivity to the life, beauty and challenges of the seas. I bought a Used-New copy and it was worth every penny. Enjoy.

More for war freaks than for divers 14 Sep 2009
By Jose Truda Palazzo Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is interesting in general, but I found the 'cuts' of the texts chosen from books and larger essays to be erratic at best. Some stories deserved to be told from an earlier point and/or continued for a longer while. Also, the book has rather long and boring passages on submarine warfare that to me were absolutely uninterested. In short, my impression is that it is badly edited and has no idea for which public it is produced.
