5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read! 23 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I read the previous book written by John PHIPPS which I enjoyed. I tried this book as it was about Malta and a mystery.Well the characters George and Kate were very believable and I would love to be like them when I get to their age, the book kept me interested all the way through taking twists and turns even though it was a long book, the build up to the end was great and made me want to visit Malta for a holiday. Well done Mr PHIPPS look forward to your next book.
Thank you

John has captured the essence of Malta perfectly whilst taking us through a gentle but exciting adventure with a number of twists. The story is believable although George is a little too good to be true! Recommended for anyone who likes a "Boys Own" type romp and gentle romance.

MALTA ENIGMA – JOHN PHIPPS Review by Sam Merry
When a retired aircraft industry engineer , George Swift, goes on a “pot-luck” holiday to Malta with a plane-load of irritatingly-demanding pensioners in 1988, he hopes to explore England’s RAF war role and avoid a boring “package holiday”. He is not disappointed.
Cut to 1943: on a secret lone Messerschmitt 109G mission for Hermann Goering, carrying a secret canister which must be delivered or jettisoned, young Heinrich Huber’s guns mysteriously jam and he is escorted down in Malta by two sporting Spitfires. This incident is the hub on which the plot turns in a historical detective story with surprising twists, which finally tie up with surprising neatness: everyone is connected in some way with this German mission and the plane’s cargo.
Back to George’s holiday hotel, where he is smitten by a woman with classic good looks, elegant walk and slim figure – what else? After warding off “a creep” who turns out to be of central interest to the plot , he finds out about Katharine’s Maltese connection and we are into a neatly interwoven plot with interesting - sometimes stereotyped - characters, in a quest to find out more about Katharine’s Catholic Maltese mother, who died in childbirth, and her relationship with Katharine’s ostracised English RAF father.
The author’s modest, old world style and values are the recognisably 40’s culture of his childhood, with all its polite superficialities, sugar coated speech and manners - an innocence on which the presumptuous Sixties and brash Karaoke entertainment impinge for the worse, though George and Catherine are suitably tolerant.
