More About the Author

Robert Westall was born October 1929, in Tynemouth, England. His first book, The Machine Gunners, was published in 1975, for which he won the Carnegie Medal. Amongst many more prizes and accolades, he won the Carnegie for the second time in 1980, with The Scarecrows. He died in 1993.

Product Description

Robert Westall was the author of 50 acclaimed works for children, including twentieth century classics "The Machine-Gunners", "The Kingdom by the Sea", "The Scarecrows" and "Blitzcat". He was twice awarded the Carnegie Medal and also received the Guardian Award as well as the Smarties Prize. Robert Westall grew up on Tyneside, the setting of many of his books and when war broke out he was 10 - a good age to enjoy it. War was exciting - Tyneside was heavily bombed and young Bob had to live through the terror of the air raids. His upbringing and family life during the 1930s and 1940s is vividly brought to life in his autobiographical writings - the character and expectations of his parents and grandparents, the influences of his surroundings, the brutality of school life and what it meant in his peer group to be both short-sighted and fat - here are all the influences that were later to surface in his writings, some of them, "like Futuretrack 5", savage indictments of social class. "The Making of Me" is a fascinating account of the early life of one of the most important and influential writers of the twentieth century, providing a unique insight into his writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book about an extraordinary man 16 Oct 2006
Robert Westall was an extraordinary man and this is an extraordinary book. In typically frank manner he describes his childhood and youth growing up on Tyneside in the 1930s and 40s. There are some extremely moving passages as well as some which are very funny indeed. Well worth reading whether you are familiar with Westall's writing or not - though it does remind you of just how a brilliant writer he was.

after reading The machine Gunners, Fathom Five, and The Scarecrows, I was so enthralled with the man behind the words that I couldn't wait to read his autobiography. The book is a fascinating insight into an amazing man. He had a very interesting life, and it is a rare and wonderful thing (it seems these days) to find an author so proud of his town, region and country. He would have been a great bloke to have a few pints with...!

Robert Westall's childhood memories are beautifully written, descriptive and evocative of a by gone era. It is easy to imagine what Robert is describing. He is not romantic in his descriptions but talks in the matter of fact manner of a Tyneside lad growing up in war time in the town of North Shields on the banks of the river Tyne. He is incredibly funny and I would recommend this book as a thoroughly good read.
