More About the Author

Gwyneth Rees is half Welsh and half English and grew up in Scotland. She studied Medicine at Glasgow University, qualifying as a doctor in 1990. In 1992 she moved to Birmingham and specialised in psychiatry. She moved to London in 1999, where she worked as a psychiatrist with children and adolescents until 2003, when she stopped practising in order to become a full-time writer. She makes great use of her educational background and training, as well as her whimsical imagination, to create the memorable characters that appear in her books. Gwyneth's love for writing extends back to her childhood, when she read non-stop and started writing stories influenced by her favourite books. As a student and young doctor she kept writing and began to attend writers' workshops in her spare time. Her first book was published in 1995.

Gwyneth is the author of many bestselling and award-winning children's books, including the Fairies series, the Cosmo series and the Marietta's Magic Dress Shop series, as well as several books for older readers. Her new book, My Super Sister, is publishing in August 2012 and is the start of an exciting new series about two sisters, Emma and Saffie, who have superpowers!

Gwyneth currently lives near London with her husband, Robert, their two young daughters and their elderly Siamese cat.

Book Description

An entertaining, thoughtful new novel from award-winning, best-selling Gwyneth Rees

Book Description

Eleven-year-old May's life changes dramatically when she leaves the city and moves to Thornton Hall, a big house in the countryside where her grown-up brother Ben has got the job of gardener - despite having been less than truthful about his qualifications!

With her new friend, Alex, May discovers that life at the Hall isn’t quite as simple as it seems. What lies behind the locked tower room door that housekeeper Mrs Daniels guards so closely?

As May and Alex begin a journey of discovery, transforming the Hall's overgrown walled garden, Mrs Daniels starts to close in on Ben's little secret. Could May be about to lose Thornton Hall - just as she realises its power to be the making of both her and Alex?

This book is about a girl called May who goes to live in a country cottage with her brother. People say that the cottage is haunted. May finds a ruined garden and she and her new friend Alex make the garden beautiful again. One day May looks out her window and sees a bright glowing light at the big house Alex lives in. She and Alex go to find out what is in the house.

I liked this book lots because its interesting and mysterious.
