I recently got back into the series and bought this book out of interest, wanting to find out more about how "Red Dwarf" was made. Unfortunately, the book disappoints somewhat, as it is not about the making of the series as such but is much more about the making of one particular episode in Series 6, "Gunmen of the Apocalypse".

The book is slim and light on text. The photographs are often interesting, offering a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of this episode, but one is still left with the vivid feeling that they are being used as filler as much as anything else.

The writer says that the problems in this episode can be viewed as representative of the problems faced in the entire series generally, but I didn't end up buying into that sale - it came across as over-cooked and naive, like a sophomore with limited access to the facts, figures, and history of Red Dwarf generally who has been tasked with preparing a report on the whole series. The result left me feeling somewhat cheated, and with the opinion the book should REALLY have been named "The Making of 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' ".

I don't regret buying it and I don't regret reading it but considering the title it certainly wasn't what I expected.

This book is a follow up to "The Official Red Dwarf Companion". As there are a few images from Series VI inside the book, it goes behind the scenes of making the award-winning episode 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' which won an emmy in the USA. This explains why the title changed to "The Making Of Red Dwarf" instead of "The Making Of Gunmen of the Apocalypse" in it's place. If you like that show in series 6 and want to know what goes on in making Red Dwarf, then buy it - You SMEG HEADS?!
