5.0 out of 5 stars Shirley Horn - The Main Ingredient 18 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Shirley Horn invited some of her favourite jazz performers to record this album in her home (inc Elvin Jones, Roy Hargrove, Joe Henderson). She says in the notes that The Main Ingrediant is the music but I have to disagree. Shirley Horn is The Main Ingrediant as she is on all of her albums. What a distinctive voice, beautiful phrasing - and she can swing with the best in her sultry way. She is sorely missed but we are lucky to be able to witness some of her live performances on YouTube and of course, just buy any of her albums - especially those where she accompanies herself on the piano. Wonderful wonderful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Horn 2 Aug 2001
By disco75 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This disc has the trademark Horn stylings, including her inimitable pace and phrasing. It is the most upbeat of her usually ballad-dominated discs, giving off a smoking heat and bluesy tinge that mark this record as unique amidst her notable ouevre. The immediacy of the recording process pays off in the feel of the album. She is a singer par excellence and a talented pianist. This disc is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Tasty Ingredient Has Made Shirley Horn the Great! 8 July 2000
By Carlos from Rio - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Would it be her Debussy-like piano? Or the formula trio+voice with those downtempo lazy and full of silence tracks? Do you remember "Fever" as a song commonly and definitely associated to Peggy Lee or even Elvis Presley? Do you remember "The Look of Love" as a song timely linked to Sergio Mendes & Brazil'66 or even the composer Burt Bacharach rendition? Now listen to Ms.Horn's takes. There's also a delightful "Peel Me A Grape". Her formula is forever. All stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars a long-time fan 25 Mar 2000

Simply Shirley; simply excellent. A nice mixture of upbeat and downbeat tunes showcasing Shirley's extraordinary talents, instrumentally and vocally. If you like traditional jazz, you will not be disappointed by this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensational Horn! 12 Dec 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is an incredible effort! The best Horn CD in my collection. Her version of "Look of Love" by far trumps the Krall version of the same name. I can best characterize the CD as bluesy, not over produced, and simply a palpable joy to listen to. The set up piece on track 1 just seems out of place given the ballad / rather maudlin context of the work. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shirley Horn's The Main Ingredient 20 April 2014
By rsteelellinas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Any album of the late Shirley Horn's is a must have simply because she is my favorite all timer; but in this one she's accompanied
by Roy Hargrove (check out his Habana album); Joe Henderson; Elvin Jones and others at her home studio jazz session rendering
standards like The Look of Love, The Meaning of the Blues, You go to my head, FEVER, Peel me a grape, & others She was
simply AWESOME and is truly a loss in our jazz heritage, R.I.P. Any of her albums arranged/produced by Johnny Mandel (the
orchestra arranger for Frank Sinatra) are OUTSTANDING.rsteelellinas
