Biography

Only Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson can rival Frank Sinatra for biggest-selling solo artist of all time. His jazz-influenced singing remained internationally renowned whatever whims, fashions or innovations were introduced by new generations. In a solo career that included over 70 albums and hundreds of singles, from the late-30s until the mid-90s, Sinatra remained universally loved even as ... Read more in Amazon's Frank Sinatra Store

The technical quality, atmosphere and content of this album are such that you feel you are one of the audiance. Recorded in 1974 live, the build up and tribute introduction by Howard Cosell (track 1, 3 minutes) is a classic and scene setting foundation for what is to come. F.S. starts singing on track 2 bursting into the The Lady is a Tramp to the extacy of the expectant audiance. Of the few live concert albums available from F.S. this is a classic collection of popular standards and anthems performed live to a hot and buzzing audiance of the public and fellow stars. If this CD is for a gift or for yourself, the recipient will wear it out playing it over and over again. A video tape of the event is also available but the pictures in your head from listening to this ablbum are as good an experiance as you need. Tip, play loud!

5.0 out of 5 stars SINATRA LIVE! SINATRA LIVE! SINATRA LIVE! 18 Jun 2010
By ROMAN
Format:Audio CD
BOMBAST! HYPERBOLE! LIVE! MADISON SQUARE GARDEN! SINATRA! WHAT A HOOP-LA GREETED THIS LIVE TV CONCERT AND SUBSEQUENT ALBUM IN 1974, SHORTLY AFTER THE 'GREAT COMEBACK'.IT WAS ACTUALLY BERATED BY CRITICS AT THE TIME WHO ATTACKED THE GREAT MAN FOR HIS MACHO DISPLAY OF SHOWBUSINESS POWER AND A FADING VOICE. WHAT NONSENSE. NO WONDER SINATRA VIRTUALLY STOPPED RECORDING DURING THE FOLLOWING DECADE. BUT ALL THIS MISSES THE POINT ENTIERLY. HERE WAS THE GREATEST OF ALL POPULAR SINGERS APPEARING BEFORE OVER 20,000 SCREAMING, DEVOTED FANS IN A WORLD FAMOUS STADIUM, GIVING HIS ALL, ABSORBING A MAGICAL ATMOSPHERE AND GIVING BACK THE LOVE HE WAS RECEIVING IN EQUAL MEASURE. YES, THE VOICE IS A BIT GRAVELLY AND NOT ALWAYS TOTALLY FOCUSED. YES, THERE ARE FORGETTABLE PERFORMANCES - 'BAD, BAD, LEROY BROWN' STICKS OUT. BUT REALLY, IT DOESN'T MATTER. THE ATMOSPHERE IS FANTASTIC. THE WOODY HERMAN BAND IS WAILING AND,AT LEAST WHEN FRANK JUMPS INTO HIS EVERLASTING CLASSICS - 'SKIN','TRAMP', 'THE HOUSE I LIVE IN' AND A SUPERB 'MY WAY' YOU ARE BACK AMONG THE BOBBYSOXERS OF THE 1940'S, SAVOURING THE INEVITABLE PHRASING, THE SEXY SLURS, BIG VOCAL CLIMAXES AND THE VERY PRESENCE OF A LEGEND. THIS IS A PIECE OF HISTORY YOU MUST OWN AS A SINATRA FAN OR EVEN AS A CURIOUS YOUNGER FAN. YOU WILL EXPERIENCE WHAT FRANK SINATRA WAS ALL ABOUT WITH THIS RECORDING. [NOT IMPORTANT IS THAT THE ACTUAL ALBUM MIXES RECORDINGS FROM VARIOUS CONCERTS AT ABOUT THIS TIME, SO WHAT? IT'S BRILLIANT.AND IF YOU CAN OBTAIN THE LIVE DVD RECORDING - ALL THE BETTER.]THIS IS THE EPITOME OF 'THE CONCERT YEARS' PERIOD OF SINATRA'S CAREER. IT'S NOT ART (1950'S CAPITOL CLASSICS), NOR RAT PACK GLAMOUR, IT'S JUST SINATRA! SINATRA! SINATRA! YOU'LL EITHER LOVE IT OR LOATH IT. HOPEFULLY THE FORMER.

4.0 out of 5 stars The last great album by Sinatra... 17 Feb 2003
Format:Audio CD
...except, perhaps for She Shot Me Down.
With the possible exception of Trilogy, this is the only worthwhile album of the 70s for Frank lovers, except for collecting purposes.
By LA is My Lady, a suprisingly mediocre album, considering the players, producers and Quincy Joneses that were involved, Frank was in fleeing, failing voice. The next, and last live album, Sinatra 80th Live in Concert, sees Sinatra struggling and scraping through a number of the songs, the last of the voice nearly gone.
But this album is far from that saddening sight. After having been retired for a few years, this was probably the last time we captured the treasure of Frank's voice. He is electric from start to finish. With the Woody Herman orchestra thundering behind him, and 20,000 ecstatic people stamping and shaking in front of him, the atmosphere here is exciting, to say the least.
Howard Cosell's introduction over the Sinatra overture is a little silly indeed, but by the time Sinatra actually comes out into "The great arena", nobody is listening to him anyway, the audiences cheers having drowned him out before Frank even appears. These cheers just swell and grow until a lost voice just says "Ladies and gentlemen, from here on in, it's Frank Sinatra!"
And from there on in, it is. It's a shame the best track on the album, "The Lady Is A Tramp" is the first one. This new Billy Byers arrangement is just scintillating. Sinatra's voice has deepened severely, and occasionally, he does waver slightly, missing notes here and there. But his charm and swagger are still there, bigger than before. It would seem he has reinvented himself. A new giant. A new master of phrasing and wit.
The album continues through some great tracks: "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Autumn in New York".

5.0 out of 5 stars The long,long intro 6 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD
Past his best vocally, but at his peak as a performer Sinatra could still whip up an audience to a frenzy, as he does here.Cole Porter's I've Got You Under My Skin is particularly well received, but the DVD version differs from the CD version where the "Where does it hurt ya baby" ad lib works a lot better than the "Old black magic" one on the DVD.
A very enjoyable concert from one of the best song stylists ever.
