The Magician

Those ominous words sent a shiver of fear up Katherine Mayfield's spine. Fear for her six year old stranger and his dark pronouncement...fear that he might have spoken the truth. The widowed mother knew it was lunacy to allow Lucas Connelly into her home, to trust the magician who had showed up on her doorstep in the dead of night. To save her child, through, she would have done anything-even struck a deal with the devil. And staring into Lucas's mesmerizing eyes she wondered if she had. His intense gaze probed her very being, robbing her of all rational thought, and his touch filled her with a passionate longing, drawing her into a vortex of desire. Katherine knew not if she was swirling closer to goodness or evil, to salvation or damnation. But as the telltale hour grew near, as all she held dear hung in the balance, she would have to decide whether to act with her heart or her head-whether she had discovered lover or a grand illusion propagated by a master.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tale of magic and mystery 6 Aug 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Katherine Mayfield's little daughter Gina has been having nightmares. They have gotten so bad that Katherine is frightened of losing her daughter. Lucas Connelly is a magician - at first glance an 'ordinary' sleight of hand magician. But he alone knows that Gina has been night flying - astral projecting - and he is the only one who can help Gina win some control in that dimension, in order that she not slip into a coma, as other small children have been doing. Children like Keith and Rosalyn's child Sharon.

The story is populated with several characters and told from many perspectives. I usually enjoy this device that lets the reader get into the head of the different characters and get to know them in depth, but I did find it a bit confusing bouncing around from person to person at times. Also, with so many telling their part of the story from different locations, then perhaps two people in the same location one after the other, it was harder to get to know them all in depth. Of course, that was often not the point of a character taking over - usually it was to develop the plot. There is no doubt that this was achieved and the story moves along quickly and purposefully. The characters are well drawn and Gina is totally charming - I often find books written for adults that have younger children in it (especially one child for the most part alone in the adult world)are protrayed too simply, almost like stick figures compared to the more fleshed out adults, but Gina sparkles.

There's a lot in here - mystery, romance, friendship, love of parent for child (not just Gina and Katherine) and the more paranormal aspects. Indeed I sometimes felt that there might be a bit too much going on - it took me some time to settle into the central story line. But the idea of the old souls recognising each other and coming together struck a chord in me and I enjoyed that side of the tale very much. There is much that is appealing in The Magician and I think especially if you like mystery or stories of reincarnation / recognition of old souls, you'll enjoy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars spellbinding horror tale with a secondary romantic plot 8 Jun 2002
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Ten months ago, six-year-old Gina Marlowe's father died so when the little girl had trouble sleeping her mother Katherine is not surprised. However, Gina fears that in her sleep she will enter the dark tunnel and never return. Katherine panics when she enters Gina's room to find her daughter not breathing. Not willing to wait for 911, Katherine rushes Gina to the nearby hospital where miraculously the youngster awakens with no apparent physical effect.

Magician Lucas Connelly senses an evil that he knows he must fight though he does not comprehend why him or the identity of his foe. Lucas realizes that he must protect Gina, but when he approaches Katherine, she rejects his premise that her daughter is in grave danger from a malevolent force. Still Katherine finds herself falling in love with Lucas, which reinforces her doubts that this man might be the evil out to destroy her beloved child.

THE MAGICIAN is a spellbinding horror tale that contains a secondary romantic subplot. The story line is filled with action from the moment the beleaguered mom realizes that her child is near death till the finish as Lucas struggles with rage and his past lives relationships with Katherine. The characters make the tale as the audience will believe in the wicked villain and the reincarnation of the lead couple as well as the metaphysical attack on Gina. Carla Cook conjures up a strong thriller that will charm the paranormal crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars An author to watch 13 July 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I expect great things in the future for this writer. Her writing flows smoothly, her characters are believable and chapter ends entice the reader to quickly turn pages. I would highly recommend this book to those who enjoy paranormal romance. This book reminds me of the Harlequin Dark Shadows series that are being reprinted. Looking forward to reading her next book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Devil worship in pretty wrapping 29 Jun 2002
By "elfiedog" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is only the second book in my years of reading that I destroyed and threw away. I was very upset to find this book dealt with satanism and involved the manipulation of children. By the cover and the blurb on the back cover, you are not at all aware of the content of this book, but by page 20 you are. So be forewarned this book is not one I would recommend to anyone.
