Review

Wright's characterful work supplies inspiration throughout the book, and in following his instruction, readers should be able to tune in to their own imagination and develop a means to express it. --Leisure Painter

When I first opened this book I thought I was going to find the usual lessons on perspective or showing a finished drawing and then describing the steps it would take to achieve something similar. But this book is as the title suggests, "The magic of drawing". It teaches you how it's possible to become the artist you've always dreamed of becoming instead of someone who will make up any excuse not to put down that first pencil mark because the results are bound to be both embarrassing and childish.

When you read the introduction you're told to follow the lessons step by step and not skip them. I have only read the first two and find that I want to savour each one. No idea whether I'll be a great artist at the end of them but at least I feel like I want to give it a go, and so the magic must be working.

I'd firstly like to point out that the one star review of this book is extremely unfair. This book does not suggest or claim there to be a "magical secret about drawing". Cliff Wright explains that the "magic" in drawing is when you manage to capture the essence of an object, person or animal in a drawing. The book then includes inspiring and clear exercises to help you free your mind of self-criticism to help you become more fluid in your drawing and confident in your potential to produce good drawings.

The exercises in this book start off extremely basic and progress very gradually onto more complex tasks and cover many things such as drawing from observation, fresh approaches to drawing, drawing from memory, capturing movement and even developing your own illustrated characters.

There is more to this book than I can write here, but as an aspiring children's illustrator I feel extremely inspired after purchasing this book. It is a joy to participate in the activities and a pleasure to just look through the pages at Cliff Wright's charming and beautiful work.

If you even have a slight enjoyment for or interest in drawing, BUY THIS BOOK, it's worth it.

I have known this artist for some time and think his advice is invaluable. To actually pick up a book that has all his thoughts on creativity with his wonderful paintings is a real gem.
He has taught me to doodle which as an artist myself, I never thought there was value in doodling. Nice to know when he was planning to meet me at 7pm a few years ago lead to a rather aggressive looking male face doodle which I discovered in one of his pages.
He also inspired me to draw in my creative writing course, just by the thought of always drawing anything, anytime.
The pages are interesting and draw you in and the beautiful illustrations complement it thoroughly.
I am so glad I purchased it.
It tells me and therefor I tell you, that even if you think you know all you need to about drawing, you may be very intregued and surprised to realise you have yet more to learn.
Nice one Cliff
