The Magic of Finkleton is a captivating novel written by K.C. Hilton. Siblings, Robert, Jack and Lizzy, are thrown into a bizarre world of mystery and intrigue when their house is burned down in a disastrous thunderstorm, which happens precisely at the same time their Great Uncle Harry dies, leaving them his home and general store in the perfect picturesque town of Finkleton, England. Finkleton is no ordinary town though; the weather is always mysteriously perfect, the crops are overly abundant and its residents are exceedingly happy. Soon after settling in, the children begin discovering astonishing secrets and unraveling clues that aid them to use their unique abilities to help bring the weather back to failing crops and a nearly destroyed village. Why are there hourglasses hooked up on strings to each individual farm? What is the secret lever? What do the maps and scrolls actually point out? The children must find the courage and strength within themselves to figure out their ancestral secrets and set out on a magical adventure to save Finkelton.

K.C. Hilton brings a powerful punch of magic into a fast-paced older children’s book that does not disappoint. I found it to be inquisitive, exciting, and truly fun to read. It is rare to find a book so intricately written in which the reader is actually encouraged to participate. I loved the use of descriptive words; the plot was full of twists and turns, and the depth of the characters was amazingly accomplished. The cover alone had me enthralled and highly anticipating this lovely read! K.C. creates the perfect recipe of magic, adventure and imagination that are all easy to comprehend for older children on up to adult readers. I very much look forward to reading her next novel, The Return to Finkleton, and sharing these wonderful books with my daughter as she gets older. I can easily see K.C Hilton’s series as either a television series or a film series comparable to Harry Potter, and I do not say that lightly. She is truly a genius in her mad writing skills, and this book portrays to all audiences who love a little magic in their life. This is by far, the best novel I have read all year, and if I could have given it ten stars, I would have. Look out world, here comes K.C. Hilton!

About the Author

Born and raised in Aurora, Illinois I spent my childhood playing street games with the neighborhood kids. When I wasn't outside, I spent much of my time reading and getting lost in adventurous worlds and whirlwind courtships. At the age of seventeen, I moved to Kentucky and eventually began to raise a family of my own. I have always been entranced by stories of magical adventure, and though I have had to live in the practical world, running a family business as well as two of my own, I have discovered that writing is an entirely new, exciting adventure all on its own! We have a large family and our get togethers are so much fun! And did I mention that I’m a photographer? Yes, I take tons of photos! We also have a mini dachshund, her name is “Roxy” she only weighs 10 pounds but is a huge part of our family. She's so spoiled!

More About the Author

Born and raised in Aurora, Illinois I spent my childhood climbing trees and playing street games with the neighborhood kids. I was a proud tomboy, until the day I didn't want to hike the land to an old graveyard. From that point forward I was considered a "girl".

At the age of seventeen I moved to Kentucky and eventually began to raise a family of my own. Having worn several "hats" my life has been an adventure all on its own. Still, to this day, I yearns to be a mechanic and own a pink toolbox with pink tools.

I can usually be found updating my website, reading great books, watching awesome movies or creating videos for my YouTube channel. Most days I craves Diet Coke, pizza and chocolate, in no particular order.

I love to read and find great books! On my YouTube channel I record book hauls (books I've purchased), fun book tags, some book reviews, giveaways and special announcements.

MY REVIEW

I absolutey adored this book... I am 30 and although this book is aimed at middle grade age range, this is definately a story that would appeal to all age ranges. The three main characters (Jack, Lizzy and Robert) were instantly loveable and the way they discovered all of the secrets that Finkleton had to offer, was really enjoyable...

A thoroughly enjoyable read which I would recommend to everyone who likes a bit of magic in their life...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous children's magical adventure 14 May 2011
By Sally
Format:Paperback
At 184 pages and with a compelling storyline, The Magic of Finkleton is a very quick read - I could not put it down from start to finish, and was very sad when it ended! (Luckily, there is definitely room for a sequel!)

You know what the book reminds me of? All those [Australian] childrens' TV shows that I adored when I was younger, like Ocean Girl, Mirror, Mirror, Butterfly Island, etc - where you have these totally normal kids who just happen to find some magic, and then it's all adventurous and marvelous and they have to save the bush/their town/the world/the universe. I could totally see this all playing out so vividly in my mind, and I think I was mentally casting the three kids from Round the Twist (Jeffrey Walker era) as Robert, Jack and Lizzy. If you like Enid Blyton adventures, or the Magician's House quartet, then you will LOVE this. It fits in so neatly with that genre.

The story is absolutely charming. I loved the setting, it has that cosy historical feel to it that I just adore (Lizzy wears petticoats! They travel by horse-drawn carriage!) and that fits so well with the whole small-town British thing. Finkleton is kind of like Brigadoon, only it exists all the time; so maybe it's not like Brigadoon at all, but it has magic in it, and that magic only covers Finkleton. The weather is always perfect - for *everyone*. Everyone has precisely the right amount of rain and sunshine for their crops but, as the blurb suggests, this isn't just Mother Nature's doing.

Jack, Robert and Lizzy (and their parents, too) move to Finkleton after their Uncle Harry dies, leaving them his shop... in which there is a secret lever that can make it rain, and a whole room full of strings and hourglasses that are all set up just so...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Magic For All Ages 10 May 2011

THE MAGIC OF FINKLETON BY KC HILTON

I have yet to read a book from the Night Publishing stables that has not left me in awe of the brilliant writing ability of it's authors.

The Magic of Finkleton by KC Hilton is no exception.

William Finkles' uncle dies unexpectedly leaving his store and home to his nephew. Ironically Williams' family home is burnt to the ground at exactly the same time. So the family due to this qwerk of fate relocate to the village of Finkleton.
Sceptics would say `coincidence naturally' but the dwellers in Finkleton would state even more clearly `that's the magic of Finkleton.'

William, his wife Emma and their three children Jack, Elizabeth and Robert settle into their new home and start to become established in the welcoming village. The old fashioned store holds many secrets that the children discover one by one. Elizabeth (Lizzie) the bookworm through her obsessive factual reading of her great uncles' books. Jack through his obsession with tidyness, and Robert through his obsession with machinery.

The dusty old shop slowly allows each of the children to discover their Great uncles' secrets. Each child at first is determined to keep their discoveries well hidden from their siblings until the opportunity arises for them to disccuss their finds in full.

Through trial and error the children correct the crop rotation by learning to control the weather. To state more would give this wonderous storyline away.

As it states in the prologue ........ Some folks say Finkleton holds the luckiest lands in England. Others shrug instead and say that it's a magical place.

This is a striking book for all ages and which of us can ignore the magic that fate has to offer. I would urge you to buy this book and enjoy it's magic.

Highy Recommended 5 stars.

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Three distressingly wholesome children, with lazily contrived mono-maniacal interests uncover the secret of the magical means by which the weather in Finkleton is micro-managed to suit the needs of all the local farmers.
The idea which is charming, and probably original is squandered in the telling, which is wooden and limping. The dialogue is declaimed in a single lack-lustre voice.
How this story won awards is surely a far more interesting mystery.
