Product Description

Trevor Reznik is a lathe-operator who suffers from insomnia and hasn't slept in a year. Slowly, he begins to doubt his sanity as increasingly bizarre things start happening at work and at home. Haunted by a deformed co-worker who no one seems to think exists, and an ongoing stream of indecipherable Post-It notes he keeps finding on his fridge, he attempts to investigate what appears to be a mysterious plot against him and, in the process, embroils two women in his madness.

An amazing performance by Christian Bale, a very good one by Jennifer Jason Leigh,
and a cool, desaturated look.

A man who has hardly slept for a year slips further and further into his own
paranoia, as he, and we, question his sanity.

It works really well as a psychological thriller, setting up a creepy, unique, dreamlike
mood for most of it's length. But the ending is so neatly ties up the loose ends in such an
obvious, 'you can see it coming' way that it takes away from all that precedes it. I was sad to
realize that ultimately, it was less smart, and about less thematically, then I kept assuming.

BTW - I've heard reports of technical/quality problems with the Blu-Ray, but
the copy I saw looked pretty perfect.

The machinist unfolds very slowly to begin with, luring you into character Trevor Reznik's world and letting you soak up his peculiar life - his cleanliness obsession, his visits to kindly hooker Stevie, his chats with a good natured waitress, his inability to sleep without something always waking him up.
Bale's extreme emaciation (he's so painfully thin it's almost a horror movie just by virtue of how he looks) helps the character really seem harrowed and exhausted, and once the strange plot points begin to occur, the film's got you hooked.
Director Brad Anderson also plays with your head by throwing in tiny visual oddities that make you think 'did I just see that'? and equally question yourself throughout.
As Reznik begins to investigate the odd conspiracy that seems to be surrounding him the film's pace also accelerates, until it eventually reaches a chase movie fever-pitch of confusion and paranoia.
It's worth bearing with it for an ending that makes sense of most of what's gone before, and is also a lot more realistic and grounding that I expected.
A brave actor, a tough film, and it's definitely worth watching.
