I have benefitted enormously from John Macarthur's Study Bible and highly recommend it for all. In particular, I feel that he always exegetes* the passage rather than importing in his own theology. He provides useful cultural, historical and linguistic insights into the passage in question to enlighten it and not nullify its meaning. His writing is concise and ordered but not lacking in meaning, and although some technical vocabulary is required, by and large someone who has been in the word for about a year should understand it. There is little theological jargon and any that remains can be looked up. Perhaps best of all is his dedication to "dress Scripture with Scripture"- i.e. to constantly provide biblical references to support his exegesis* and passages which are similar in meaning for extra reading.

I was also thankful that it has been made in the English Standard Version, which is arguably the best translation, and as a literal translation, necessary for studying the Bible. (As opposed to just reading it).

Negatively, he (as mentioned by other reviewers) does not provide much commentry upon certain passages, particularly in the Old Testament. I felt his commentry upon Jeremiah was lacking. Furthermore, the only disappointing commentry in and of itself was his commentry on 1 Corinthians 14. I am not a pentecostal, nor a charismatic, and, knowing John Macarthur's rejection of the gift of tongues I was interested to investigate his claims. I didn't feel that he had taken the full truth of the passage to the open but instead had introduced his own opinion.

Nevertheless, a quality book worthy of having. If I was to have any one commentry it would be his, and I am thankful to God that this book exists.

God Bless you all.

*exegesis is the extraction of the meaning of the text. eisegesis is its opposite which is importing a meaning into the text.

I am very pleased with this Study Bible, and it is exactly what I wanted. The quality of the cover and binding is very good, and the print is also very good.

The notes from John MacArthur are clear and helpful, and are particularly exhaustive in the NT books.

Highly recommended if you are in the market for a good Study Bible.

From Matthew to Revelation, this commentary is superb for unashamedly getting to grips with the truth of scripture. The theological basis is reformed and attempts to be faithful to the original context and purpose of the text. Be prepared to be challenged on your own scriptural interpretations as Macarthur's expositions of difficult passages pack quite a punch. I have not agreed with every one of his study notes but I always appreciate the challenge they pose to my own study.

The Macarthur study bible is let down in the Old Testament where the notes are much more vague and thinly spread. I am currently going through Jeremiah and in Chapter 5, a 31 verse chapter, Macarthur includes only seven study notes. Compare that to the standard ESV Study Bible, which has 23, and you see that Macarthur has left the Old Testament frustratingly incomplete. Perhaps one man doing a study bible whilst maintaining a full time preaching role at a bible school and a 3000 strong church was a bit ambitious.

Still worth it for the New Testament if you have enough dough. However I would support the standard ESV Study Bible as the best study bible on the market (its awesome with loads of colourful maps and has a great single column format).

This is the complete English Standard Version (ESV) of the Holy Bible with John MacArthur's verse-by-verse study notes, which include historical and theological information, maps and much more. The notes are easy to understand & this helping my study of scripture enormously!

Top, top author and pastor. a little light in the old testament teaching notes, but wow its excellent in every other way. I have bought two copies as I tend to give my bibles away to those I meet on the train or when I am out, so I found the price of this bible welcoming.

I love this study bible, the ESV study bible has more notes (especially in the O.T), but is not handy to take with you, and has to many extra articles. This MacArthur bible is just the bible with notes, and that's what a study bible should be, not a library

I have wanted a Bible that would explain the Word of God in simple terms and It was recommended to me by my nephew. The MacArthur study Bible is what I have been looking of, for a long time and at last I can understand Gods Word.
