`Reading The Lying Carpet, is a dreamy experience - the language is lovely; the free verse has an offbeat rhythm; the illustrations are breathtaking.` --New York Times

Gorgeous! 12 Jan 2012
By Jan
Format:Hardcover
I am not at all sure who the author had in mind when he wrote this book, but I LOVED it!!

The statue of the little girl and the tiger skin rug are both to be found in the living room of a grand house. The statue wonders if she has always been a statue or whether she was once able to run and play like any other girl and the tiger skin rug tells her amazing stories about his past life. The stories contradict each other and the tiger skin rug confesses that nothing he says is true so the little stone statue is sure of only one thing - wherever they have come from they are both stuck in the room, unable to move for time being. The end of the story, which I won't give away, is pure magic!!

The language is beautiful and the illustrations are wondeful. This is a book to treasure

I picked up this book because I am a primary school teacher and the title, illustrations and the first page intreagued me. It sat in a bag for nearly two weeks before I read it, but having opened it this evening I felt compelled to write a review. It's hard to describe the content of the story beyond the blurb above, but it's written with a fondness and wit that very nearly moved me to tears. The story raises questions of identity and memory and the roles they play in shaping our perception of the world and ourselves, and is told with a simple charm that will fascinate children and engage adults on an altogether different level. Simply wonderful.
