The grass isn't always greener, as an Irish immigrant finds out when he moves to Montreal. Facing hardship at home in Ireland, jobless Ginger Coffey (Robert Shaw) decides to up sticks and take wife Vera (Mary Ure) and daughter Paulie (Libby McClintock) to settle in Montreal in search of his dream. But after six months, and with prospects looking no better, Vera and Paulie decide they've had enough and badger Ginger to return to the old country. When a job on a local newspaper does finally materialise, it still doesn't bring in enough money to prevent his wife and child from moving out. Things go from bad to worse for Ginger when he loses his job at the paper, and, finally unable to face an uncertain future, hits the bottle with a vengeance.

This is a great little film from Canada that was shot in Montreal. Both Robert Shaw and Mary Ure give great performances as a maried couple who move to Montreal looking for a better life. I have only a video tape copy of this film so to see a dvd release is good news!!

A simple story with excellent performances 19 Sept. 1999
By Alexander M. Moir - Published on Amazon.com

"The Luck of Ginger Coffey" stars real-life couple Robert Shaw and Mary Ure as Irish immigrants in Montreal. A simple story of luck, love and tough times, Shaw especially gives a phenomenal performance as the somewhat escapist Coffey. Though the film's sound quality is somewhat lacking (you can't even understand the French Canadians speaking English!) this is an excellent film for students and fans of Shaw.
