Book Description

2 April 2009

First published in 2005 in B format as The Holford Low-GL Diet, this book quickly established itself as one of Patrick Holford's core nutrition titles. Patrick is at the forefront of research into fast, safe and lasting weight loss, pinpointing that the secret of successful weight loss is to balance your blood sugar. By eating foods with a low glycemic load (GL), you can balance your blood sugar and not only lose weight quickly but keep it off, feel full of energy and enjoy greatly improved health.

In the four years since first publication, thousands of people have followed Patrick's low-GL system with great success, and numerous scientific trials have validated the initial research. As well as encouraging weight loss, it has been proven that a low-GL diet can slow down the ageing process, improve mood and memory, lower cholesterol without drugs, prevent and reverse diabetes and heart disease, and cut cancer risk. This expanded and updated edition - THE LOW-GL DIET BIBLE - is packed with new information on why low GL beats low-fat, low-calorie and high-protein diets every time, and why it is number one for weight loss and good health.

More About the Author

Patrick Holford BSc, DipION, FBANT, CHNC pioneers new approaches to health and nutrition. He is the founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London (Europe's leading training centre for nutritional therapists), is Chief Executive of the Food for the Brain Foundation and the author of over 30 books.

He is widely regarded as Britain's best-selling author and leading spokesman on nutrition and mental health issues, hence being frequently quoted in national newspapers from the Daily Mail to the Guardian. Patrick is also popular on radio shows and national television as a presenter, interviewer and guest.

Patrick started his academic career in the field of psychology. While completing his bachelor degree in Experimental Psychology at the University of York, he researched the role of nutrition in mental health and illness. He became a student of the late Dr Carl Pfeiffer, director of Princeton's Brain Bio Center, and later a student of Dr Abram Hoffer, Director of the International Schizophrenia Foundation in Canada, who were leading the field in mental health and nutrition. In 1980 he started treating mental health patients with nutritional medicine.

In 1984 Patrick founded the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION), a charitable and independent educational trust for the furtherance of education and research in nutrition. Today, ION is the largest training school in the UK offering a diploma course in nutritional therapy and is widely respected as a leading edge organisation by professionals and media alike. Patrick formed a relationship with the late Dr Linus Pauling, who became the Patron of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition.

In 1986, Patrick started researching the effects of nutrition on intelligence, collaborating with Gwillym Roberts, a headmaster and student at ION. This culminated in a randomised controlled trial testing the effects of improved nutrition on children's IQ - an experiment that was the subject of a Horizon documentary and published in the Lancet in 1988. This study was the first of its kind in the world and considerably raised awareness of the role of nutrition in intelligence.

During his years as director of ION, Patrick ran many educational campaigns that brought attention to the importance of zinc and pyrolluyria, disglycaemia, antioxidants, methylation and homocysteine, IgG food allergies, essential fats in mental health - factors still greatly underestimated in the treatment of mental illness. Patrick retired as Director of ION in 1997 to focus on writing, teaching and researching.

Patrick was awarded an honorary Diploma from ION and is also an Honorary Fellow of BANT (the British Association of Nutritional Therapists), and a Member of CHNC (The Complementary and Natural
Healthcare Council). In 2003 he founded the Brain Bio Centre at ION, a treatment centre pioneering the optimum nutrition approach for mental health, to formalise the treatment of mental health with nutrition and to act as a research centre. The Brain Bio centre is owned by the Food for the Brain Foundation, a registered education charity set up by Patrick to promote awareness of the link between learning, behaviour, mental health and nutrition. In 2007, Patrick was appointed Patron of South African Association for Nutritional Therapy, and in 2014 he was inducted onto the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame.

Patrick lectures and conducts workshops throughout the world on a wide range of topics, to the public, health professionals and the medical profession. In the UK he presents around 50 workshops and lectures a year. His knowledge, personality and enthusiasm, together with his strong scientific approach, helps him to stimulate lively debates, simplifying complex issues and help the public and professionals expand their understanding of health issues. Patrick is frequently involved in government campaigns and debates concerning optimum nutrition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary new look at losing weight 10 Nov 2010
Patrick Holford makes so much sense and his diet is not just about losing weight but also about eating healthily. Having read his book on Optimum nutrition, which I found much more informative and useful than this one but it was then interesting to see how he has adapted his optimum everyday diet to one with the aim of losing weight. My only criticism is that about two thirds of the book is taken up with testimonials which I found a bit tiresome as I am already a Holford convert and did not need anymore convincing. I just wanted to get on with the diet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a diet - a whole new way of life 2 April 2005
By A Customer
This is the ultimate diet book that actually explains, scientifically why it works and why other diets don't work. It is not just for losing weight, it is about changing your life, your health and your outlook. The claims in the book seem quite amazing but I can report that they are all true - I started the diet post Christmas/New Year feeling fat and fed-up - I lost 10lbs in 5 weeks, never felt hungry, I slept better, had more energy, my skin improved dramatically, I haven't put the weight back on and I still feel amazing. I would recommend this to anyone as it is easy to follow, the recipes are delicious and easy to make and of course, it works!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but a little disappointing 20 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book on kindle and the formatting is most of the reason why I am disappointed.
I have never been on a diet but I wanted to feel more healthy and this diet looked the least faddy of them all - mostly as it was backed up by the science behind it so I can understand why I shouldnt eat certain things. I enjoy the science behind it but the author does have a tendancy to repetition which can get a bit tedious at times, but the content is very interesting. I have only been doing the diet itself for a week and have lost the expected weight the book says I will lose. I enjoy the food and dont think it will be a problem following it. The main issue with the kindle edition is that a lot of the tables are very difficult to read if at all and the Glycemic index at the back cuts off the end of the page so you only get half the information and have to manually do all your own calculations. If I was going to buy this book again I WOULD NOT buy the Kindle edition. I would buy the hard copy though and will be recommending it to friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars This just works! 18 April 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've been doing the Holford diet for only a month. I didn't have a great deal to lose, but what I did have was stubborn belly fat that hasn't shifted in 6 years of trying every diet under the sun. I had some success with Weightwatchers, losing 5lb over a 12 week period, but it went straight back on and more besides. I had begun to believe there was just no solution to the fact that as I've got older, my metabolism has slowed down.

Then someone told me about Holford, and despite having read all the claims of 'quackery' and him not being properly qualified etc, I decided to give it a go. Now, I'm pleased to say, I really don't give a fig about what people say about quackery and lack of qualifications. The Holford Diet not only works, there's just no diet that has made me feel as good as this does. I have increased energy (10-fold!), I'm sleeping better, my skin is healthier, my hair is shinier, AND I've lost 6lb in only 4 weeks. My body fat percentage has reduced from 27% at the start to 24% (only 2% off what would be considered 'ideal'), and I've lost an inch off my waist already. My clothes are fitting better (some are becoming loose), and my overall shape has changed. I can even feel, and see, the difference in the shape of my face.

This diet isn't a fad. It's a way of life. More than anything, this book gives the reader a true understanding of the science behind food - and in particular, sugar, glucose, fructose, how the liver operates, the pancreas, insulin, and the role of stimulants in all of this. Once you have a fundamental understanding of it, it's almost impossible to eat badly.

5.0 out of 5 stars When all else fails, pick up this book 6 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book on recmmendation from a holistic life coach who reminded me that, having tried every diet in the book (apart from cabbage soup diet - YUK1) and none of them were sustainable or gave the results I was desperately looking for. After 35years of dieting according to Government recommendations - low fat, high carb, I found myself three stones overweight and feeling a sense of desperation.

This book is no quick fix however, following Patrick's principles and adding in good quality dietary supplements, I now feel more positive about reaching my ideal weight. The recipes are delicious, even my hubby says so! Try the chick pea curry which has to be the quickest curry I have ever made as well as being nutritious, filling and delicious. The bolognese recipe is the best we have ever tasted.

Give this book a whirl, what have you got to lose except sluggishness and excess weight??

5.0 out of 5 stars The best long term dietary advice. Ever. 15 Aug 2012
By Linners
I've lost the pounds, and never whispered a word about dieting because of this book.

Very easy to understand. Lots of research to back up the science. Food restrictions are not crippling, because you manage your food like a points system. The difference between this point system, and Weight Watchers as I understand it, is the quality of food. Low GL allows you to eat wild salmon and home-made mayo (virtually no points which is super fantastic). This food would be off Weight Watchers richtar scale. Sugary foods, and quick release carbs such as mangoes and baked potatoes score higher on the GL diet to encourage less frequent consumption. This doesn't mean they are unhealthy, but rather they trigger the release of insulin in your system which is dubbed as our 'fat storage' hormone.

Excellent, excellent, excellent read.
