Why Choose Low Carbohydrate?

If you are an athlete attempting to lose weight, teach your body how to more efficiently burn fat, limit blood sugar fluctuations, eliminate bloating and gas, then a low carbohydrate diet is an excellent choice for you.

Unfortunately, most low carbohydrate diets do not take into consideration the high activity levels of endurance athletes, and increase risk of extremely low energy and immune system deficits due to inadequate energy intake.

Here are just a few of the weight loss and performance enhancing gems you will discover inside:

  • Why utilization of fat for energy cannot happen if the body is constantly drawing on carbohydrate reserves and blood glucose for energy.
  • How the burning of fat for energy does not create this same cellular damage as when glucose is used to create energy.
  • Why you don’t need to load with carbohydrate before a race.
  • Who should not choose a low carbohydrate diet.

The “Low Carbohydrate Diet For Triathletes”, by Ben Greenfield, is the first book to address the practical steps involved with implementing a low carbohydrate diet and still succeeding in endurance sports.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative, quick and easy 1 Feb 2013
By chasx1
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
formatting is a little off as the previous reviewer noted, but just for the recipes. I used the free Amazon desktop software for that. Otherwise it is an informative primer into becoming metabolically efficient from a very knowledgable man, who actually practises what he writes about and is constantly trying to improve on his own methods.

i have been a little confused about how to implement the high fat/ low carb diet as an athlete as the whole paleo/ primal thing actually does not advocate any "chronic cardio" and this guide helped me out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not on Kindle 9 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am a fan of Ben Greenfields. I listen to his pocasts and read a fair amount on his website. This book is based on his experience as an athlete on a low carb diet.
It is simple to follow and Ben writes in a style that the "non Scientist" can understand. He backs up the diet and the comments with clear explinations of what he is talking about. Ben is not afiard to test things on himself and has the qualifications and experience to back up his answers.

Now for the BUT..
This book is not big, it is not expensive. Spend the extra and get the paper version. The Kindle version I downloaded misses the right hand side of the book, not by much and not all the way through, but enough to be annoying.
The book is also not a "flowing book". You will constantly want to go back and forth as well as mark pages. While you can do this on the Kindle it is going to be a lot easier in paper.
Think of this as a reference book more than an instruction book. You will want to go and look further into this and research more recipies. There are also links referenced in the book that you will want to go and look at.

Be Aware. Ben is American. The recipies are all american. You will need to think a little and adapt some of the stuff in here for the UK. For example, I have yet to find a UK supplier of UCAN SuperStarch. To order this from the USA does not make it cost effective.

So yes I like this book, I have several others from Ben. No I should not have bought this one on the Kindle. Yes it is infromative and I think is the way to go for longer distance athletes. Yes you will have to think a little and do your own research.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Information But Not Enough 14 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This eBook is a good introduction to using a low carbohydrate diet for endurance sports like triathlon but it is a bit short on detail for the money. Also, the book is quite badly formatted for the Kindle making it difficult to read in places, especially the tables of meals etc.

Much of the detailed information about groceries and supplements etc. is also very USA oriented so you will have to adapt and substitute products you can get in the UK as well.

I think I would have been more satisfied paying half the price I actually paid (£10.86) for the amount of detail contained therein but as an intro to the topic it is adequate.

5.0 out of 5 stars hardcore low carb... 24 July 2013
By r.d. - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase shame in that...but I'm just a mainstream person...I like low carb-ing, but I'm not a triathlete...a good approach on how to pursue low carb eating when hardcore training...and will likely re-visit for the rest of my life...intermittently. Definitely worth it for athletes, but in truth, also for the rest of us after-work/weekend warriors who are just trying to add exercise in our high-frequency lives and still stick to a low carb diet in the process. Good luck.

2.0 out of 5 stars Print edition is pretty worthless 16 April 2013
By Jeff - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The ebook version is cheaper but I had a Amazon gift card so decided to purchase this book. What I found was that there were a large amount of links. Links that could be clicked in the ebook version but obviously not the printed edition. And the complete link wasn't provided, so I couldn't even type it into my browser. All they would have to do is actually type out the complete link or provide a PDF file with a list of links used. Things like that really annoy me and it's hard to look past that and see the good (although very brief) information in the book. Most of the book is different recipes and meal plans. The book is also in large font so you can read the actual useful information in about 20 minutes. The only thing I found really useful where his recommendations for race day nutrition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 12 Jun 2014

This is a really good book if you are an athlete who wants the benefits of using your body fat for fuel. It doesn't take you into a ketogenic state but it helps you change the way that you fuel your body for optimal performance. Ben Greenfield is very knowledgeable and I recommend going to his website. Great stuff there. He has also come out with a new book called "Beyond Training", also available here on Amazon.
