Product Description

Review

'The uneasy atmosphere of blackout London is finely conveyed, the dark alleys, the crowded air-raid shelters, the forced cheerfulness and the ever present threat provide the perfect setting. The many moral and socio-sexual issues embedded here never distract from the total effect of this gripping novel.' (NEWBOOKSMAG )

SUNDAY TELEGRAPH

'Laura Wilson is very good at creating an authentic period atmosphere. ... The portrait of life and death under the Blitz is vivid and moving, told in turn by three characters... When the three com together at the end of the book, the meeting is dramatic and inevitably tragic.' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format:Hardcover
Laura Wilson could be one of those writers who is just too good to get the mass readership she deserves. Her sin ? She isn't writing a series of crime novel about Mr Plod the Policeman. She is writing crime novels where every one is different from each other and genuinely genre stretching. The Lover is not only unlike any other book she has written, it is unlike any crime novel that anybody else has written. The skill with which she evokes life in bomb damaged London while at the same time weaving a story of creeping evil is really excellent. Laura Wilson is one our most exciting authors.

UNEXPECTED GEM 10 Aug 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is a murder mystery set during the blitz. The characters are all different and their personalities are established successfully and so they are totally believable. The story is told from the unique perspectives of each character. I was surprised to find myself really enjoying this novel. I expected it to be old fashioned once the wartime theme was established. A bit like "seen this all before havn't we?". But to my amazement I found it a thoroughly gripping and enjoyable read. I highly recommend this book to all ages from teens to pensioners. There's an aspect of horror contained within these pages but somehow it sits well with wartime when horror was abundant. Laura Wilson is one of those authors who can make you believe that you are actually there witnessing the events and that is a rare quality!

Crime? what crime? 7 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
Wilson for some strange reason calls herself a 'crime' writer. If that is the case, then I find it stretching the word. Perhaps she should drop the crime title, and simply write old love stories, as this book would fit the latter and not the former. Not the best of books, I'm afraid, especially if you enjoy a good crime novel.
