Product Description

Vivienne Michel is in trouble. Trying to escape her tangled past, she has run away to the American backwoods, winding up at the Dreamy Pines Motor Court. A far cry from the privileged world she was born to, the motel is also the destination of two hardened killers – the perverse Sol Horror and the deadly Sluggsy Morant. When a coolly charismatic Englishman turns up, Viv, in terrible danger, is not just hopeful, but fascinated. Because he is James Bond, 007; the man she hopes will save her, the spy she hopes will love her

The Spy Who Loved Me 27 April 2010
By G. Hill
Format:Paperback
As this is one of the later books in the series, I found this to be an interesting take on Bond. It is the only book written in the first person from the perspective of another character; the heroine. Bond doesn't even appear until we are well in to the story. The heroine's character had enough to keep me interested and I was waiting to see how Bond would fit in to the dynamic of the story as it unfolded. The end of the story is also a novel one as a character previously unseen and unheard gives an assessment about the type of man that Bond probably is.

I have read that Fleming wasn't happy with this story. Whether that is because of the reaction to it (which was negative), or because he was genuinely unhappy with what he produced is hard to say. Either way it is not the best in the series. There are some holes and times it does have a rushed feel to it. But approach it as something a bit different to the other Bond books and you'll be satisfied with the result.

I've always found the James Bond novels much better than you might imagine they would be.Well written, tightly plotted and full of detail. This one however is a bit of a novelty.Written from the perspective of the heroine, imperiled in a backwoods motel, the drama of the hostage situation plays far too small a part compared to the backstory of the girl. The feel is of a short story padded out to meet a publishing contract. As a Fleming fan one hopes there aren't too many mysogonist gaffes especially when writing from a feminine perspective and only the line 'All women love semi-rape' grates.Interestingly Fleming also shows himself already well ahead in the product placement game. In a note Bond leaves the girl after an early morning runner he calmly recommends Guerlain's "Fleurs des Alpes' instead of Camay. The big Jessie.

Nothing like the movie 21 Dec 2008
By Sapphyre1120 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you expected this book to be like the movie version, forget it.
The plot is totally different. It is told in the 1st person from the perspective of the 'bimbo'(I only call her that because it is the term used to describe her throughout the book) named Vivienne Michel who 007 saves.
Viv is on a cross country ride on her little Vespa when she stops at a motel. She is hired as a receptionist by the couple that manage the place but their plans for her are deadly. Viv is supposed to stay at the motel alone until the owner shows up the next day to close the place for the season. Instead, 2 thugs arrive and their plans for Viv aren't for the best. Then James Bond shows up.
I will stop here but of course there is alot of action and gun play in this book.
If you want to know Ian Fleming's character better, I suggest you read his books. I will probably jump to his first and then work my way through.
Might as well get to know 007 a little better.
