I became a Jeffrey fan when I read Love of a Cowboy. This one just may be better. Alex is a beautiful, wounded soul who cannot withstand Doug, another wonderful but wounded human being. Irrestible love and dogged determination break down the emotional walls and bring them together so they can stop fighting each other long enough to battle against a true villain. It's a real page turner, one of those that keeps you saying "Just a few more pages, and then I'll stop." But you won't stop, because the book is too good to put down.

In the small town of Callister Idaho, Alex McGregor, a hard headed lonely woman is known by the locals as the witch on the mountain. Doug Hawkins, an outsider trying to escape problems of his past finds love in the most unexpected place. His feelings un-returned by the scared battered soul hiding in the shell of Alex McGregor poses a challenge to be won. During the many twists and turns of this story I really fell in love with these characters both with their quirky dispositions and their true to life personalities. This story has you wrapped up until the end in mystery and intrigue for both the characters and its complex plot. I hope to read more like this in the future.

Alex McGregor and Doug Hawkins meet under less than perfect conditions; her first sight of him is seeing him with the woman her husband cheated with, ending their marriage. Yet, it is a beginning, and the two get closer after a mysterious fire kills Alex's ex husband and the cabin he was in at the time. Life continues to get her Doug and Alex's way, making romance something both want, but a secondary consideration. However, good things come to those who wait.

Sometimes, it feels like the main plot gets lost in the details of this meandering novel. Both Doug and Alex are scarred souls contending with things that re-open old wounds constantly. However, the story has a realism that many will find appealing.
