Wow! I totally ADORE this book! I was completely engrossed as soon as I opened it. This is more like a literary collection than a girly book, which is how it's marketed. It's packed full of beautiful letters. There are hundreds and hundreds in here, and they are all so completely different. Also there is a detailed biography of each author which I think is brilliant, and often multiple letters allowing you to picture their relationship and the situation at the time. I didn't know much about a lot of the authors and there were some I had never heard of.
Prince Albert's are fascinating. I recently watched "Young Victoria" which is a beautiful film. They really were in love, so young and thrown together but devoted to each other. One of my absolute favourites is by Walter Bagehot, he wasn't the most famous of men, didn't do anything particularly amazing, but he was a great writer and one of his letters is touchingly innocent and honest, and funny! He wrote it not long after their engagement and he is obviously crazily in love, struggling with himself to contain his emotions but comes across as totally devoted. I love the line "I should like to write in big letters I LOVE YOU all across the page".
I had already seen 2 other editions of love letters, but wasn't satisfied which is why I bought this one. The first was given to me as a present, the one edited by Ursula Doyle. It's good enough for most, but you can tell it's a rush job and not well edited. The second was the one edited by John Kirkland, it's almost the same book but with a lot of errors. Both editions come across as really rushed, clumsily put together and not particularly special. Finally though I am finally satisfied. A really beautiful book, and one I can proudly give as a present to friends. I read it cover to cover but I also think it is the kind of book you can flick through, pick up every now and then, or use to remind yourself how amazing these letters are.
