Book Description

6 Feb 2014

An exquisite collection of the very best writing on love. THE LOVE BOOK presents a new anthology of writing on all aspects of the most important emotion on earth. There's true love, unrequited love, erotic love, platonic love, thwarted love, comic love, mourned love and just about every other type of love, explored here in poetry, prose, letters and lyrics from the greatest writers in the English language. In one fabulously comprehensive volume, Allie Esiri brings together texts ancient and modern, from William Shakespeare to Sharon Olds, Catullus to Carol Ann Duffy, the bible to Bob Dylan; she offers us sonnets for wooing, lamentations for loss and perfect passages for weddings. Full of classics and all-time favourites, THE LOVE BOOK also includes lesser-known marvels, such as Mozart's love notes, Sappho's lesbian odes and a letter from Napoleon.

Forget corny greeting cards and chocolate box cliché, this is the literature of love at its finest. Beautifully presented and helpfully divided into themed sections, it's an indispensable collection for anyone who's ever had a heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference or Conversation Piece 6 Mar 2014
By Janet - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
As a poetry lover, I was thrilled to be able to read (perhaps devour is a better word) this book. The selections run the gamut from ancient to modern, from sonnets to song lyrics, from Shakespeare to Bob Dylan, and I must say that I found very little to quibble with here. Every literary format is covered, letters, prose, as is probably every aspect of love. I could see this being used as a reference for writers, definitely as a conversation piece, and perhaps as a book club selection. There was so much material in the book that discussion topics would be plentiful and as varied as the selections covered. This is the kind of work that you can put down and pick up at will, you can read out of order. I will use it as a reference piece for whenever words fail me.
