Product Description

Award-winning author Jillian Hunter both amuses and delights with another irresistible tale of scandal and seduction.

When Chloe Boscastle is caught indiscreetly kissing a man in a park, her brother Grayson–the protective patriarch of the Boscastle family–sends her off to a country manor to stay until the scandal in town subsides.

Soon after Chloe’s banishment begins, she is shocked to learn that her neighbor Dominic Breckland, the devilish Viscount Stratfield, has been killed in his bed. But she is even more stunned to discover the dangerously handsome “victim” taking refuge in her lingerie closet one night. By some miracle Dominic has survived his attack–and wishes the world to believe him dead. Can the alluring Lady Chloe keep his secret? Dominic uses all his masculine charm to persuade her as they work together to unmask his enemy. Of course, being caught sheltering a seductive scoundrel could further mar Chloe’s already tarnished reputation. But, really, what’s a little scandal to a lady in love?

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me. Disappointing. 16 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Chloe Bocastle and her neighbor Dominic Breckland, Viscount Stratfield, meet unexpectedly. Wounded and dodging his enemies, Dominic hides in a trunk of filmy lingerie in Chloe's room. Dominic is allegedly dead, having attended his own funeral a month before, while he figures out how to seek his revenge. Chloe, too, has a no-less-fatal flaw in a woman of the time: the inability to be demure. He offers her a devil's bargain: to keep quiet about his presence while he determines who killed Chloe's brothers and wants him dead, too.

I thought the above summary was interesting and I was looking forward to reading the book, my first by this author.
Major disappointment. I thought the story was too unbelievable not in terms of the attempted murder and pretending to be a ghost.
I didnt feel like the character's of the heroine and hero were developped or the reason why they ended up liking each other. They meet for the first time, he's hiding in her undergarment trunk/wardrobe/ closet (not exactly sure what exactly it was finally). His stab wounds are infected, he's febrile and she's not sure he will survive the night, but he still has enough energy to try to seduce her??? That would be the furthest thing on his mind surely.

Every scene with the both of them was crammed with nonsensical dialogue that was meant to be witty banter. It just rang false. people would not talk to each other that way and definately not in those times. I found very little in the book that would correspond in any way shape or form with the period this story was meant to be set in. Not in the behavior of the characters or their speech and expressions. Definately not in the heroine's behavior.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Romance 14 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Chloe is sent to her Aunt and Uncles after managing to get involved in a scandal and needs to get away from mischief but unfortunately the quiet stay in the country doesn't turn out like that when Dominic ends up hiding in her room. After nearly being killed Dominic is hiding trying to find out who wanted him dead and make his revenge but he doesn't count on meeting Chloe who arouses something inside him. Chloe is trying to become more ladylike and demure but after meeting Dominic that goes out of the window, she soon falls for Dominic and tries to help with his enquiries so he can come back to the land of the living.

Very amusing book with Chloe managing not get into trouble wherever she is and of course meeting Dominic leads her back into mischief with having to lie to her family and having secret meetings with Dominic. She is a very amusing character who just wants to have fun and doesn't like restrictions that are put on her. Dominic is also amusing as he has fun being dead and making everyone think he is a ghost but he is also a serious trying to find out who wanted him dead and another family mystery. When the two come together they are very passionate and Chloe soon surprises Dominic who can't resist her.

Funny and engaging book and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chloe is a Keeper 27 Jun 2005
By V. Seaton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Usually, I favor the hero more than the heroine in romance novels. However, this time, I must admit Chloe Boscastle is a keeper. She's so witty, determined, and assertive that you have to love her.

After running into Dominic one night in the rain, Chloe is unable to forget him. So, when he is murdered she morns him. But then later comes home to find him quite alive, but injured and hiding in her closet amidst the lingerie. From there, the reader is taken on a suspenseful, but utterly charming and humorous story as we see Dominic try to discover the truth behind his murder plot.

A connection between Dominic and Chloe is formed as she tries to help him, and he tries to protect her from his prime suspect. In the meantime, they are unable to resist one another and so the story goes... Full of enjoyable supporting characters and stories, The Love Affair of an English Lord will make you laugh. Jillian Hunter's characters are so distinct and developed that you feel a connection even to the minor players. Her balance of narrative and dialogue is great, and the story is not your typical regency romance. This Love Affair is a delight.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Meeting in the Lingerie? 31 May 2005
By L. Martin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Jillian Hunter has created a strong, unique family with the Boscastles, who easily compare to Nora Roberts MacGregors. The reader never knows what to expect from these individuals. Entertaining does not even begin to describe them.

Chloe Bostcastle, the rambunctious younger sister of the Boscastle clan, is determined to enjoy life no matter what the outcome. She's banished to Chistlebury to stay with relatives after she's caught kissing a man in public. Chistlebury is a sedate country town where Chloe's family is sure that she can't get into trouble. But if there is to be trouble, it is sure to find Chloe.

Dominic Breckland, finds himself in Chloe's lingerie. Not a bad place for a dead man. Seems he was stabbed and presumed dead, staged his funeral, and is now intent on finding the man responsible for his death, as well as that of his brother and Chloe's brother. Hiding in Chloe's closet to escape being hunted, he must trust her to help him. And so begins the journey into murder, mayhem, and romance.

Character development is excellent, as is Jillian Hunter's norm. Hunter puts two strong characters together and the reader enjoys the sparks flying. Chloe is strong willed, gorgeous, and not about to be bullied into forming to expectations. Dominic is also strong willed, ruggedly handsome, and used to people jumping at his command. Both are quick tongued and intelligent, which gives the reader many pages of witty banter between the two.

The villain is not unknown, but how Dominic exposes him is a mystery. The final duel was a bit of a letdown and the outcome expected. Even though we all knew it was coming, it was still very entertaining and a worthwhile reading adventure. I think the best part of Hunter's books is the repartee between characters.

THE LOVE AFFAIR OF AN ENGLISH LORD is a wonderful book and makes the reader anxious for the conclusion to this trilogy, THE WEDDING NIGHT OF AN ENGLISH ROGUE. My biggest complaint is that Hunter has created the Boscastle family with so many diverse characters, it's a shame more books couldn't be written to give each of them time for their own story to be told.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Average Romantic Tale 16 Nov 2005
By M. Carter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a fairly quick read, with a predictable story. I read the entire book in a day, but wished my next order from Amazon had already arrived. The main characters, Chloe and Dominic, simply don't have much to distinguish them from hundreds of other love-struck regency Brits constrained by social mores and convention. Aside from the main story of their mutual seduction, there is the sub-plot of how Dominic will prove that his uncle is a killer and traitor to the Crown. ...Yawn...

2.0 out of 5 stars "What an ignominious start to a love affair." 2 Oct 2012
By cathyr - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Plot:
Someone wants Dominic dead. In his push to find the wannabe-murderer and bring him to justice Dominic falls into Chloe's room. A shame he doesn't have time to woo her properly.

Comments:
- Historical (1814) romance.
- 4984 kindle locations, 362 pages
- m/f - frequent, explicit.
- Part of a series. While it would standalone, there is an ongoing plot arc.
- Includes excerpt from Book 3 "The Wedding Night of an English Rogue".

Opinion:
My main problem with this book is purely a personal one - I'm simply not enamoured of the writing style; it fails to truly engage me. Somehow, to *this* reader, it all feels very dry.

Look, it's a good enough story. It's obviously part of a series and there is an ongoing sub-plot of espionage. Characters from the various books mingle (they are family after all) and we see their lives further unfold.

But I found it lacking. This book just failed to inspire me.

The Boscastle Series:
Book 1 "The Seduction of an English Scoundrel" - Grayson and Jane
Book 2 "The Love Affair of an English Lord" - Chloe and Dominic
Book 3 "The Wedding Night of an English Rogue" - Heath and Julia
Book 4 "The Wicked Games of a Gentleman" - Drake and Eloise
Book 5 "The Sinful Nights of a Nobleman" - Devon and Jocelyn
Book 6 "The Devilish Pleasures of a Duke" - Emma and Adrian
Book 7 "Wicked As Sin" - Gabriel and Alethea
Book 8 "A Wicked Lord at the Wedding" - Sebastien and Eleanor
Book 9 "The Wicked Duke Takes a Wife" - Harriet and Griffin
