Book Description

Two middle aged "adventurers", at least old enough to know better, leave friends and security behind to embark on a journey toward a new and exciting life in Greece - a veritable graveyard for ill-informed and naive "wannabe" entrepreneurs such as they.

Their story highlights the almost daily necessity to adapt to changing circumstances and predatory rivals in order just to survive in a totally alien and sometimes hostile environment.

Most "change of life" accounts revolve around relatively settled and successful individuals looking to add a foreign home or holiday villa to their already healthy life's portfolio, whereas the Nouvels landed in Greece with little over £1000, a big dog and huge hopes and expectations - nothing else.

Hilarious, sad and sometimes dangerous experiences eventually mould them into a strong and stable unit that finally wins through and allows them to enjoy the peace and tranquillity that comes with being a "Lotus Eater" - but it was a close call!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a journey! 4 Jun. 2013
As a fan of the Greek Islands and Corfu in particular I found this book a brilliant read. We hear of so many people upping sticks to follow their dreams and Des and Maggie have been good enough to share their exploits with us. You really get a feel for what it is like trying to make a new life in a foreign land - not always easy but worth the effort.

An entertaining and very funny book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 23 May 2013

If we were all brave enough to take the huge step of leaving everything behind and escaping to an idyllic life style this book describes the reality. The pitfalls and difficulties of surviving in an alien environment are described in their bare details. The successes and failures are described with no attempt at hiding anything. All in all a good read and worth the few pennies paid for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most enjoyable read 19 Sept. 2013

The Lotus Eaters was a wonderful little book to read. The journey Des and Maggie took from London to Roda was a roller coaster of highs and lows. Des is a natural storyteller and his style of writing is so easy to read. I felt engaged as a reader and have recommended this book to others. Let's hope he has more anecdotes of Greek life to share with his growing fan base. Job well done D.J.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read 30 May 2013

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. A brilliant insight into Des and Maggie's decision to leave England behind and start their working life on the greek islands to finally settle in Corfu. The lows and the high's of some of the characters and business deals that they endured makes this book a cracking read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maggies Bistro Roda. 27 July 2013

If you ever had the pleasure of dining in Maggie Bistro in Roda Corfu. This is a must read.
This is the story of real life on the beautiful Island of Corfu and a hard working Couples journey
to a fantastic retirement, A couple that I have had the Privilege to have known for the last 16years.
Who have grown to be such good friends, they did the honour of Best Man & Maid at our wedding
last October.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story 20 Sept. 2013
I could not put this book down and read it in almost one sitting. Having had a love affair with Corfu for many years it brought back many memories and it's many funny moments set the scene so well. It is one thing to holiday in Corfu but quite another to live and work there and Des and Maggie's brave journey from England to Santorini and then Corfu has to be admired. I look forward to a follow up Des!

Having been a friend of Des's since the late 70s in Scotland and then visiting him and Maggie in London and Surrey before they departed for Greece, I was so excited to hear of this book through the local grapevine! I just had to download it and read about the exploits that I knew of through hearing from friends what Des and Maggie were up to. Knowing them both made this such a readable book - but anyone picking it up will enjoy it! So lovely to hear it in you own words Des. I hope you're both enjoying your well deserved "rest" and lapping up that idyllic lifestyle that you've worked so hard and bravely to achieve.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous read 11 Jan. 2015

I have fallen in love with Roda and it's people but never ate at Maggie's. To tell the truth I avoided it like the plague, I was in Greece and I didn't want food that I got at home. This book is a wonderful insight into moving to a different country and culture and trying to make it your home. Mr Nouvel has a gift for story telling, no holds barred. I recognised some of the people. I chuckled at times with his tales. Would highly recommend this book to anyone.
