Product Description

To eat the fruit of the lotus is to lose the desire to return home. But everyone who does has a reason. Shepherd's Bar is a focal point for a group of expatriates living in and around a small town on the island of Crete. The bar is owned and run by reformed alcoholic Erik Shepherd (Ian Hendry). For Erik temptation is never far away, and his faltering marriage to Ann (Wanda Ventham) provides solace. The arrival of Englishman Donald Culley (James Kerry) causes something of a stir. Culley is charming, handsome and by his generosity he quickly wins over other members of the little community. But Culley knows that the long-suffering Ann has a secret of her own, a secret that could prove far more destructive than Erik's drinking... Never before available on DVD, this classic series is a collection of nine self-contained plays, each telling the story of a different member of the community. Each story is skilfully woven into the continuing sub-plot about the deteriorating relationship between the mysterious Erik and Ann Shepherd.

Product Description

Enjoy again one of the best-loved and most compelling BBC dramas of the 1970s. Set on the gorgeous but mystery-shrouded Greek island of Crete, The Lotus Eaters stars Ian Hendry and Wanda Ventham as a married couple caught up in a strange power from the dawn of civilisation. The complete series 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic 1970s television... 29 Jan 2010
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
It is well over 30 years since The Lotus Eaters was originally screened on BBC2 and then BBC1. Created by Michael J Bird the story involving undercover spies, colourful characters, marital stresses and beautiful scenery was incredibly popular and its release on DVD is long overdue.

Starring the highly talented and much missed Ian Hendry as Erik Shepherd and sultry actress Wanda Ventham as his wife Ann they are the owners of a bar on the Island of Crete. Other regular characters are artist and reprobate Nestor Turton played by Maurice Denham along with, Police Chief Krasakis played by Stefan Gryff.

A whole host of well known faces guest star in each episode and whilst giving none of the game away the 9 stories are self contained and very watchable.

In spite of this being 1970s drama the style of presentation and acting has stood up very well to the test of time. I think this is because of the clever mix of location and studio filming and of course the well constructed stories.

If you remember the series as I do then it will not let you down seeing it again and if it's the first time around then you are in for some excellent drama.

Don't miss the Second Series which completes the story...

5.0 out of 5 stars Back To The 70s 10 Nov 2010

After viewing the first two episodes, we began to enjoy this very much. It is a trip back to the 70's and to how Crete was before mass tourism arrived. Enjoyable and well-worth watching. We will buy the second series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Attractive drama with a bitter taste 20 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase
Michael Bird created Cretan drama mainly carried by the two stars, Ian Hendry and Wanda Ventham as bar owners Erik and Ann Shepherd. Both characters have had a traumatic past and Ann has been to required to marry Erik so she can act as a sleeper agent on the Greek island. This improbable scenario set as a backdrop for the nine episodes featuring ex-pats living on the island for various reasons. The quality of the stories is patchy and some develop and conclude in an unpleasant manner. In addition to the rough diamond Erik, well played by Ian Hendry and the sensuous Wanda Ventham, whose presence makes the stories watchable. In addition, Maurice Denham makes the most of his role as Nestor, while Julia Goodman gives her character an innocent beauty.

Well worth seeing, but not comfortable viewing.

I liked it - saw it years ago on tv when it was first aired - but missed some episodes - so it was nice seeing the complete series again - but it ended rather abruptly - is there a follow up series 2 - ? Would like to see it if available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostagia Rules 19 Sep 2013

I am old enough to have seen the original series on TV. It has not suffered with the passing of time.

The story-line is challenging, but leads to compulsive viewing.

Recommended to anyone who is prepared to think about what they are viewing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good acting but some episodes bizarre 1 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase
Although this is a veteran series, the late Ian Hendry and Wanda Ventham are very good actors and most of the cast were too. It is very dated but watchable; however some of the episodes were just ridiculous and didn't seem to fit in with the rest. Perhaps a red mist came over the writers' eyes at one stage. There is an interesting interview with Ms Ventham post-series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Voice from the past part 1 29 May 2010

Haunting to see it again, brought back many evocative memories. Well-acted, though the style seems somewhat stilted now. Look past that and it is quite addictive.

Though rather 70's now it was exotic stuff for its time - Crete where the series is set was the equivalent of the Seychelles today.
