Product Description

Georgie Burgess has known only neglect and abuse during his seven and a half years of life. His alcoholic mother does little to prevent the bruises and scars inflicted on Georgie by her brutal boyfriend. With each blow, the little boy withdraws further into his dreams. When he wins a small rose bush in a lottery, it seems as if one of his dreams has finally come true. But after a particularly savage beating, he is taken from his mother and placed in a home for boys. Surrounded by strangers, and with the rosebush as his only link to the world, both the boy and his treasured plant must learn how to grow and thrive. Irene Hunt has written many books for young people; she has won both a Newbery Honor and a Newbery Medal for her work. Drawing on her professional background in psychology, she creates a heartwarming tale of emerging trust and hope in The Lottery Rose.

I remember feeling very bummed out one day when I was very young. My mother suggested I go with her to the book store and choose something to read. We picked out this particular book together. When I got home, I sat on the floor in my room and didn't come out until I had finished it. I was so grateful to my mother for taking me along that day! I stopped feeling sorry for myself after reading all the horrible things Georgie had gone through. I am so glad that book has been a part of my life. I am 28 years old now and my copy of the book has fallen apart over these many years. Thanks Goodness for amazon! and Thank God for Irene Hunt!

Irene Hunt does a superb job of telling the moving story of seven-year-old Georgie Burgess, who was abused and neglected by his mother and her boyfriend. As a result of this abuse, Georgie withdrew from his classmates. Later, Georgie won a rose bush in a grocery store lottery. The rose bush was Georgie's only friend until he was placed in a Catholic boys home. At the home Georgie found the friendships and the love that he did not have. Recommended for readers age twelve and up.

TOO SAD
The Lottery Rose was too depressing. Georgie, Robin, and everything that happened in the book made me collapse in tears. I would not recommend it to anyone under age twenty.
