Product Description

Palaeontologist Professor George Challenger claims that dinosaurs are to be found in certain parts of the Amazon and is sponsored by a newspaper to journey to the region in order to prove his theories. His expedition includes Paula White, the daughter of a fellow explorer who was lost on the plateau on a previous trip, big game hunter Sir John Roxton, Professor Summerlee, who wants to catalogue the differing life-forms he is expecting to uncounter, and Edward Malone, along for the ride in order to impress a girlfriend. Unaware that their arrival and efforts are being closely watched by an ape man the expedition encounters terrifying creatures one after another, culminating with them being trapped on top of the plateau after being chased by hundreds of dinosaurs and a menacing ape man. Written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1912, the film was originally made in 1925 by First National Pictures and was a box office smash. The arrival of talkies spelt the end of The Lost World and it was withdrawn from distribution in 1929, with all known prints and negatives being destroyed to pave the way for a possible sound version. In the event, none was made, although the original would prove the inspiration for such other epics as King Kong and Jurassic Park. Although better known for the creation of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s own favourite was George Challenger, who appeared in two further novels. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also proud of the film (in which he appears), taking test reels of the dinosaur footage created by Willis O Brien to speaking engagements and passing them off as real proof of the existence of dinosaurs!

Wonderful 30 July 2001

A wonderful film, and a wonderful DVD. Designed for the purpose of entertainment in 1925, it still manages to entertain even after over 75 years. The DVD is presented well with the best quality print available.

This is a wonderful DVD containing a restored version of the 1925 First National movie The Lost World. This version is a combination of a nearly complete print found in the Czech Republic in 1992 and the existing video tape version. It took over 6 years to restore and the results are beautiful.

The extra features are nice as well. There is a scrolling bio on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 12 minutes of Lost World dinosaur outtakes (found in Warner Brothers Stock Footage), and photos of items from the orginal press kit. The movie also contains a modern score and a traditional score. The title cards are new and it runs are the correct projection speed. This version contains about 30 minutes of additional footage that isn't on video cassette versions. A must for Sci Fi movie collectors.

The Lost World 1925 is a great film. I've read the book also. Not much teenagers watch silent films, but I do.(I'm 14,writing this now. It's a likable film with characters that make the film great. The dinosaurs we see are also likable. And the "Brontosaurus in London" part is the climax. This film that I bought runs for 63 minutes.I hope they show the 93 minute version on television.

Stunning animation from the silent era
This wonderful restoration of a seminal film that was destroyed by the studio at the start of the talkie era anticipating a remake (this materialised as “King Kong”). Read more
