Product Description

1066. King Harold and most of England's warriors lie dead on the battle-field. William of Normandy is marching on London with a victorious and exultant army.

Fearful and desperate, the great council of the kingdom elects a new king to unite the country against the invader.

Their choice falls on Edgar, the thirteen year old descendent of Alfred the Great.

The hopes of a nation are placed on a youngster with little experience of life. All he has to help him are a fierce intelligence, courage and the loyalty of a handful of friends.

Burdened with impossible hopes and expectations, mired in fear and treachery, Edgar begins a life-time of resistance to the Norman conquerors.

The Battle of Hastings is over. The Battle for England is about to begin.

If you ever had lessons at school on the history of England you surely learned about 1066, the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror, but who ever mentioned King Edgar? Martin Lake has certainly done his research and unearthed this previously invisible claimant to the throne.
William, Edgar and surrounding characters are expertly portrayed in this story of hopes and disappointments, loyalties and betrayals. The interplay between them, particularly between the mature, practised warrior politician William and the boy Edgar, forced rapidly to learn to scheme and survive in the jungle of intrigue, teases the reader with its twists and turns. This Norman world is not so different from ours, the people are very real in their motives and desires, some selfish, some selfless. they act and speak as we would. It's all very believeable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it never drags, the pace never slows, something is always about to happen.
I'm waiting impatiently for the follow-up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten History 10 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Imagine Germany had won the war and we were now living under the Nazi jackboot, engaged in a process of gradual forgetting of our real history as we began to absorb the new history and ways. But there would be resistance and this is what Martin Lake writes about in relation to the Norman Conquest so excitingly and evocatively and in so doing stirs in the soul a sense of injustice at the imposition of the Norman yoke and the spirit of resistance. He gets under the skin of the characters and in conjunction with time and place draws a picture of what might have been.

Gradually the Normans erased signs of the former life as they appropriated our land and wealth, built their churches and castles, eliminated English and imposed their nobleman on us, who are, incidentally, still with us today. The Tory party is led by a direct descendant of William the Conquerer. The richest man in Britain, Duke of Westminster - Earl Gros venor, is a Norman, as are most of the others. Even into the 19th century there was a sense amongst the working man of England of being under the Norman yoke. They have not gone away. They are now setting out to destroy our education and health service. Of course, Lake does not deal with this... yet, but he reminds us that then there was an alternative and there still is. Keep them coming Martin.

This book is a good read, a fast paced historical adventure utilizing colourful and complex characters to tell a truly dramatic story. The book holds your attention as you experience, through the characters, the dilemma associated with hard and complex decisions, feel the conflicting emotions and sense the building tension. It is a coming of age story set in a different world, a different time, but full of the timeless human emotions that define us all.

Lake has woven a complex web which is laden with complexity and beauty that as you traverse threads that lead you deeper and deeper into a thrilling and ultimately rewarding adventure.

I relay enjoyed this experience and have already started to read Lake's second book, Pick and Mix.
