The novel is the story of a newly married ordinary couple, in the days of the Lebanese civil war. It is about ordinary people caught by chance in the crossfire of combatants. It offers a real insight into how people cope in such terrible conditions and what it must be like to have to endure them. It shows in gut wrenching detail how this psychic hurricane, the civil war, sweeps through the lives of these people without mentioning any religion or politics. It shows what war does to people when caught in it and what they go through day after day in order to survive until finally they leave the country, and in doing so they lose their sense of belonging, their identity. Anyone who has fled a war zone can identify with this book, since human beings are the same anywhere in the world, the fear they experience when held at gunpoint is the same no matter what nationality or religion they belong to. In the end its the people who lose.
