I have read, and greatly enjoyed, all of Mary Stanley's previous novels. The Lost Garden however stands out for me as her finest work to date. Mary has continued to masterfully develop her themes of survival, loss, and redemption, but whilst her earlier works are structured to tell the tale from many angles, The Lost Garden is told through the eyes of the protagonist. This has allowed Mary to demonstrate her outstanding characterisation, and Esme Waters is the most vivid of her creations. Mary has never shied away from tackling the most difficult of subjects, but has always done so with a warmth, humour, and understanding that inspires the reader. The Lost Garden shows Mary Stanley at her best; the themes are engaging, the characters and their relationships are skillfully drawn, and overall the book is superb!
