Action horror about the mysterious fate of the Roanoke Colony. In 1587 British colonists journeyed to America hoping to form a permanent English settlement on Roanoke Island in Dare County. Ananais Dare (Adrian Paul) is left in charge when his father-in-law, John White (Alex McArthur), leaves for provisions. As the settlers begin to die in gruesome ways, Ananais soon surmises that Norse spirits haunt the island. He enlists the help of a Native American, hoping he can rid Roanoke of the spectres before the colonists are completely wiped out.

I have seen a lot of horror films in recent weeks and most have been pretty poor. So it was good to find a horror film that at least has intelligence, thought and a little imagination.. OK so it may not be the most amazing looking film with gallons of blood. It does however have a decent enough story with beleivable characters and a some creepy moments. It is also set amidst actual historic events which gives it an extra edge.

Performances are good all round and at least in this film you have rounded characters that you can care about instead of the usual teen filled slasher. It's not amazingly scary really but it does keep you on the edge of your seat at times.

If I were to compare it with another film I would say that it is rather like 'The Village' except it really does have monsters and pretty nasty ones at that. The monsters are more like spirits, similar to the dead people in the cave, in 'Lord of the Rings - Return of the King'.

All in all an enjoyable movie that should entertain you for a couple of hours.

Really bad. I managed about 20 minutes before giving up. The acting is more wooden than the haunted forest. I should have realized it was going to be poor when I didn't know any of the actors. Avoid.

Just watched this film on the Horror Channel, so no idea if it is exactly the same as the DVD or if there are any extras on the DVD

Being a Highlander fan, any film with Adrian Paul will catch my eye in the schedules, but after his recent dreadful Highlander film, I was a little apprehensive about this one. Not being from the US, I didn't know that it was a real story (pardon my ignorance of this period of American history!), though obviously this story treats the events with a supernatural turn. The actual horror is really minimal but the drama was fine, the acting was good. The film was a little choppy in places but perhaps that was the TV broadcast ? and the discontinuities might not appear in the DVD production. Adrian Paul is in great form, .. why isn't he in more action movies or dramas like this (perhaps he is .. just looking at some of the films listed on the movie databases)

A very watchable period film.

I am so glad I only rented this pile of drivel, because as it is I spent too much on it, both in time and money. I could forgive historical inaccuracies, I didn't expect a documentary, but I can't forgive the rest of it - in fact it puzzles me whether some other reviewers were watching the same film. The acting is appallingly poor, the accents in particular are painful to listen to, and the portrayals of native Americans would have been thought patronising and offensive in 1930. The plot had originality to recommend it but sadly the writer(s) seemed unable to create a coherent storyline, and they are equally bad at dialogue. The special effects suck, too, but I can actually overlook that because that's a fault that can be down to low budget. But when you start out with one of history's great true-life mysteries and come up with something more like an Abbott and Costello horror spoof, you really should be ashamed.

This has to be one of the weakest films I have seen in years. Its a very C Grade production with amateurish acting and lousy scenery and backgrounds. I don't know why anyone would buy this unless they were a masochist.
