A variant on the ubiquitous "found footage" movies genre that almost invariably involve ghosts and hauntings. Like Lost Woods [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC
] The Lost Coast Tapes involves a search for Bigfoot.
A documentary film maker trying to restart his career hears about a hunter who claims to have found a dead Sasquatch, he cashes in his savings of $75,000 and with a small film crew sets off into the Northern Californian Lost Coast to interview the hunter and hopefully prove it to be a hoax. Seems an odd way to invest your savings but suspend belief more than usual and plod on regardless.
As the hunter, Carl Drybeck, refuses to show them the corpse straight away they suspect he is hiding something more than just his missing partner.
Night time in a small compound of wooden huts surrounded by an electric fence brings a succession of growls and screams and a sense of encroaching horror that leads them to seek safety in the main residence. In the daytime they find the obligatory footprints that give the creature its nickname as well as a nest that may belong to the beast.
As it is a found footage movie you get everything you would expect from that genre, lots of running around, out of focus shots, dark scenes where you cannot see a thing, brief glimpses of something monstrous and lots of shouting and swearing.
Normally these movies aren't very interesting and stupidly give the game away in the opening few minutes, to its credit Lost Coast provides a few surprises along the way and the ending isn't quite what you may think. It's not a great movie by any means but it's not as cliche ridden as many of this genre.
Worth a shot if you like found footage movies but it won't rank too high in the list of Bigfoot movies.
