Book Description

11 April 2013
Not everyone who's missing is lost
When two teenage girls go missing along the Irish border, forensic psychologist Paula Maguire has to return to the hometown she left years before. Swirling with rumour and secrets, the town is gripped by fear of a serial killer. But the truth could be even darker.

Not everyone who's lost wants to be found
Surrounded by people and places she tried to forget, Paula digs into the cases as the truth twists further away. What's the link with two other disappearances from 1985? And why does everything lead back to the town's dark past- including the reasons her own mother went missing years before?

Nothing is what it seems
As the shocking truth is revealed, Paula learns that sometimes, it's better not to find what you've lost.

Review

Either Tana French and Michael Connelly secretly co-wrote this book, or Claire McGowan is a knockout new talent you should read immediately. I'm betting on the latter (Lee Child)

Claire McGowan is Ireland's answer to Ruth Rendell (Ken Bruen)

Fresh and accessible without ever compromising on grit or suspense (Erin Kelly)

A brilliant portrait of a fractured society and a mystery full of heartstopping twists. Compelling, clever and entertaining (Jane Casey)

A keeps-you-guessing mystery (Alex Marwood, author of The Wicked Girls)

A terrifically assured and pulse-pounding novel; dark, sad, lyrical, and full of superb twists (Stav Sherez)

2.0 out of 5 stars Gave up 5 May 2013
By Suzanne Moore VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I liked the synopsis on the back of the book but having started to read it got very fed up with it.
The main character has been sent back to the village where she grew up, set in Northern Ireland she saw her fair share of violence because of the troubles in Northern Ireland and someone in her life has disappeared, so she has made her career about dealing with lost people. So she has been sent back to help deal with the case of two missing girls.
This is a well written book but I found it so depressing, the main character I just didn't like at all and just don't care about her, which Is always a must for me with the main character in a book. Clearly damaged by her childhood it's appearing in her current lifestyle by the way she acts and avoids everyone.
Tried to give it some time to get passed that but after ten chapters Ijust had to stop as I couldn't be bothered with it, it was like doing a chore and as someone who always has a book on the go and knows exactly what I am going to read next I gave up. Wouldn't recommended this to anyone, the reason I gave it two stars instead of just one is because it is well written and well researched.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great setting but a bit formulaic 8 May 2013
By Janie U VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Any book based on the Irish border needs to reference the "troubles" in some way and this book sets itself well. The psychologist, who is the main character, has returned to the town after 12 years and comes to face her own past as well as the history of her town. There are parallels drawn between the current missing girls with those that have gone missing in the past, maybe showing that nothing has changed underneath.
Paula does not come over as a strong character and needs more definition. There are clearly plans to use her in further novels so maybe this novel is being setup clearly as a foundation building exercise. As a member of a police team, she is incredibly frustrating, despite repeated warnings she is determined to take on parts of the investigation on her own and seems to get away with it every time.
Aside from the detail of Paula's characters, this is a strong novel, particularly he plot although I did feel that the end was rushed.
The Irish setting is covered very well and even the different accents come across along with all the other differences down to religion and sex to just name a couple.
Good start to a series, I'll be interested to see what's next.

By Nicola TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Having read and enjoyed Claire McGowan's first book, The Fall, I was looking forward to reading The Lost, which is the first in a series of books featuring psychologist, Paula McGuire. With her own demons having kept her away from her childhood home in Ballyterrin, Northern Ireland, for 12 years, she finds herself back there helping on the investigation into some missing girls. She meets up with old flame, Aidan O'Hara, and also has an unexpected start to working with her new boss, Guy Brooking.

I did enjoy this book, but I expected to like it more, hence my score (if Amazon would let me) of 3.5 stars. The story is good, if a little obvious, same goes for the characterisations.

Overall I found myself not exactly eager to pick it up each time, but I did think it was an easy, readable sort of book and a promising start to a series.
