This quartet album recorded live "in Europe" in 2003 represented a new departure for Carla Bley, who in the recent past, at least, had produced a series of (very) big band albums. The quartet features Carla (p), partner Steve Swallow (b), Andy Sheppard (sop/tenor) and Billy Drummond (d).

As expected the compositions are all by Carla (although the first track is a reworking of "Three Blind Mice").

There are five tracks on the CD (53.58) but two are mini-suites. The total track lengths vary from 6.01 to 17.07. Overall the tempos are on the slow side although the "funkier" "Hip Hop" is the pace one might expect!

Unlike her big band albums, where Carla's piano playing is rather in the background (a la Ellington) here she is an integral part of this inspired quartet. Maturing Andy Sheppard, the only Brit in this otherwise American band, performs as expected: brilliantly. We also get to hear more of Steve Swallow, and Billy Drummond too.

I guess Carla had written much of this music to be played by Andy (in the same way that Ellington wrote for specific musicians). (For anyone unfamiliar with Andy Sheppard search out albums released under his own name).

This is highly structured modern jazz. I have had the album since its initial release and find that its originality and freshness remain, despite having been played many times. The album received a multitude of rave reviews upon its original release and I can see no reason to change those opinions. 5 stars.

This is intelligent and quirky Carla! There are few artist left in the popular music world making real impact , with true creativity. Look no further...you will surely find creativity in this music. The music (which can be called 'jazz' if you want to narrow it's scope) on this cd will keep you glued to the cd player for months with it's humor and detailed 'arquitecture'. And lets not forget the excellent playing of all involved. Steve Swallow just keeps getting better (check him out with the Scofield Trio live at the Blue Note...and with his own trio too). Excellent recording too! Overall a great cd full of wonderfull music as only Carla Bley can create.
