More puzzle than plot 25 April 2009
Fun:
I really loved the original Sherlock Holmes stories, and I've enjoyed some other Holmes computer games. However, I'm sorry to say this one was something of a disappointment.

The back of the box describes it as a "lavish mystery adventure game", but there's not much adventure in it. Each case you undertake has a bare minimum of plot, and is really just solving a sequence of puzzle minigames.

Having said that, the puzzles are well made. If you are looking for a casual puzzle game, rather than an adventure, then it is certainly entertaining and probably worth playing. A lot of the scenes are beautifully drawn too.

Lost cases 23 Sep 2009
Fun:
This is a casual game. It installs from CD and plays without the disk present. I had one technical problem, after the opening credits, the game collapsed to the desktop. This was caused by the upgrading of the Adobe flash system on my machine. There is a patch on the Legacy Interactive website which cures the fault.

The game has 16 cases, which all follow the same pattern. There is a short introduction, followed by one or more hidden object screens, a puzzle (usually fairly easy) then a cull of the suspects, one by one, by spotting which one has his/her associated icon changed. Holmes then explains how the crime was done.

The cases become more complicated as you work through. There is a timer running and later cases are tough to complete first time around.

Graphics are reasonable, recalling Victorian London well. Sound is innocuous. Control is entirely mouse driven and works well.

My only regret is that there is no place in the game for deducing the culprits.

Game lasted roughly 10 hours, but this is common for casual games. It is value for money. The game is licensed by the Conan Doyle Estate, so there are no departures from the Holmes known from the books.

This was caused by the upgrading of the Adobe flash system on my machine. There is a patch on the Legacy Interactive website which they say cures the fault. 3 hours is the time I spent trawling the internet to find an answer to the crash to desktop at the start, this was after I downloaded the patch and updated Adobe Flash only to be told the patch was corrupt. No-one could tell me where if at all, I was going wrong.. so I gave up. Can't comment on the game itself because I never got to play it... sorry very disapointed!
