Product Description

Book Description

Welcome to the ultimate rainy-day book: three generations of the Brandreth family teach you every game you'll ever need to banish boredom from Wink Murder to Sardines and from Consequences to 'Squeak, Piggy Squeak'.

Product Description

One good thing about a recession is that we need to go back to making our own fun. Games are in the Brandreths' blood, they have spent thousands of weekends and rainy holidays playing them and now Gyles, Saethryd and seven-year-old Rory want to share the very best with you. THE LOST ART OF HAVING FUN picks out over 250 games, guaranteed to make even the grumpiest child or adult laugh, and then with all kinds of interesting stories and lovely illustrations, it shows you clearly (and very entertainingly) how to play them. There are classic parlour games alongside all kinds of interesting ones you might not have come across yet.

Nine chapters cover pretty much every eventuality: Rainy Day Games, Car Journey, Analogue Fun in a Digital World, Music and Drama, Word Games and Brainteasers, Racing Games, Party Games (split between children's birthday parties and dinner parties), Country House Weekend and last but not least Seasonal Games: Christmas, New Year and Easter. Forget consoles and board games, this beautiful book is all you need. And Queen Victoria (whose favourite games are here too) would be amused. Very amused.

5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood games 2 Feb 2014
By Ri
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A marvellous book. How we used to have fun with no tv, internet, mobiles, etc, etc. A real feast on how children used to amuse themselves with little of nothing. That's what I call using brainpower, and it really was fun. Hopefully this super book will bring back some of the real fun we used to have as children and how it brought kids together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hours of fun 30 Jan 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have spent an enjoyable week with my grandchildren aged 4 and 6 re visiting many of these half forgotten games from childhood. A great success and the TV rarely switched on! Consequences was greatly enjoyed by the 4 year old who loves drawing.
I would recommend this to any parent and grandparent to keep on their bookshelf. I have bought several copies as gifts for friends who are grandparents!

Great to read up on fun without an electronic gadget, even better to try them out. Being incredibly silly with your children is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring back the old! 16 Jan 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This was a gift to my 50 year old son for the enjoyment with his two children. He was thrilled with it and could see its possibilities for the present and the future. I heard about it on Countdown with Gyles Brandreth. Thought you would like to know.
