Review

‘Masterpiece? Oh yes, I’ve no doubt about that.’
Evening Standard

‘Among the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the 20th century.’
Sunday Telegraph

‘An extraordinarily imaginative work, part saga, part allegory, and wholly exciting.’
The Times

‘When it comes to the nation’s favourite books, one title runs rings round all the others. J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings was chosen by an astonishing 20 per cent of readers in the survey conducted by W H Smith.’
Daily Mail, 4 August 2000

From the Back Cover

"the English-speaking world is divided into those who have read 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' and those who are going to read them."
SUNDAY TIMES

Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him the Rings of Power – the means by which he will be able to rule the world. All he lacks in his plan for dominion is the Ruling Ring, which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Bagggins.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as the Ring is entrusted to his care. He must leave his home and make a perilous journey across the realms of Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, deep inside the territories of the Dark Lord. There he must destroy the Ring forever and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

"A Story magnificently told, with every kind of colour and movement and greatness."

If you are one of the poor souls who have not read this mighty epic because you think all that talk of dwarves, elves and trolls is a bit sad, do yourself a favour - ignore the genre tag, ignore the thousands of third rate imitations that fill the bookshelves of the nation's book shops, and read this and be overwhelmed.

What does great literature need? A plot helps. Great characters. Tension - something to make you turn the page. Excitement, dismay, joy. And at the end, your should be sorry that it is over - and be tempted to start again from the beginning.

Not every great book has all of these virtues. But The Lord of the Rings does - and more.

It would be impossible to improve on the plot, the narrative flow, the brilliant pacing and masterly movement from scene to scene - many of which happen concurrently. And all this from a simple, single premise - destroy that ring!

The characters (of which there are legion) are immediately involving, fully drawn - but the simple old fashioned hooks are there as well. Good guys are likeable, bold, brave, honourable. The bad guys get what they deserve. Some of the Hobbits in particular grow enormously in depth as the book goes on, growing up before your eyes, their personalities re-drawn by the great trials they go through.

Tension, excitement, dismay, joy - you bet. Many parts of all three books are utterly rivetting, veering from edge of the seat, last ditch combat, through great chase scenes, to tense and draining treks through darkness and horror.

And the ending - greatly extended compared to the average work of fiction, and correctly so - is at once uplifting, joyous, beautiful and achingly sad. The sense of greatness and beauty lost, even in victory, is truly remarkable.

And most of all, Tolkien's use of the language he plainly loved is sublime. There are passages that hit extraordinary heights, sometimes lyrical, sometimes moving, horrifying, serene.

I've just re-read this again - perhaps the fourth time now - and it was just as exciting and rewarding as the first time. Put down your prejudices, be bold - it's not "fantasy", it's not "science fiction", it's not for childen - it is one of the very greatest works of English fiction, of any age.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books ever written. 28 Sep 2001
By Mr. A. J. D. White VINE™ VOICE
I have read these novels more times than I care to remember and enjoyed them everytime... I have also spotted little things that I had previously missed, so its well worth re-reading as well.

All I can say is read it. However you might ask why 4 stars and not 5 stars.... having looked at this book in the book shop I was rather narked to note the poor quality of the book itself... It looked like it could stand being read a few times then it would fall to bits... I would personaly advise either getting the seperate novels or getting a hard backed version if you want to be able to re-read this book.... and you will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best 3 Jan 2002

The Lord of the Rings is simply the best book I have ever read. It is that rare animal which is nearly all things to nearly all men.
Tolkein paints his pictures with just the right amount of detail, sending the imagination of his reader soaring on an epic journey, which, if you have the stamina to complete, will stay with you forever. The real beauty of it is; you can repeat it,over & over again.I'm about to buy my 4th copy, having read it for the first time more than 30 years ago!
If fantasy is not your scene, or your imagination is on holiday, forget this one. But if you love a good story, well told, stick with it.The first few chapters are a transition from The Hobbit, & if you're not already a fan they are a bit hard going but well worth the effort, as the story gathers pace & takes on epic proportions.Adventure, horror, humour, romance, they're all there.
Don't be put off the cheap paperback either There's nothing wrong with a cheap & battered copy to take the knocks whilst the more expensive big brother stays at home for Sunday Best. That's where mine's going.
