"The Hills of Emyn Muil" is the fourth adventure in the "Shadows of Mirkwood" series of adventure packs which expand "The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game". The story pits the heroes exploring these barren and dangerous hills, avoiding pitfalls, and continuing their quest to track down the creature Gollum.

This expansion is unique in many ways. In terms of the number of players, it is probably more difficult, the more players present, which is something of a rarity. The quest features only one card, and this requiring only one progress token to complete, with the adventure rather based around exploring locations and collecting a certain number of victory points. It has a difficulty rating of 4, putting it on a par with "Journey Down The Anduin" from the original set, and the first expansion "The Hunt for Gollum". However, if players have been playing the adventure packs in sequence, with the extra cards they should much more easily be able to tailor their hands to suit the job in hand, and as such I found this quest much easier than "Journey Down The Anduin", for example. Nevertheless, that alone can't be used as criticism, and indeed the lighter difficulty comes as a pleasant refrain from the challenges of the previous adventures.

Still, the most common complaint about this adventure is that it is seemingly monotone. Depending on what sort of player you are, this scenario might indeed feel extremely barren and uninteresting, but on the other hand if you managed to read "

3.0 out of 5 stars Not an essential addition for the casual player 12 Jan 2014

Unless you are a hard-core LOTR LCG collector, there are other adventure packs (AP) that will add more useful cards to your card pool AND offer more exciting and replayable quests. This AP does have one of the most powerful ally cards in the game (Gildor Inglorion) and some Eagle trait support (Descendant ally). The LOTR core set is a requirement to play this AP also.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok beginner pack, but does not hold up the test of time.... 22 Oct 2013

Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
To start, let me tell you that I own 3 copies of the base game, and one copy of every encounter deck and every expansion. I have 9 playable hero decks that I play regularly.

My take on the player cards: Brand is not a great hero. His ability is limited to multiplayer, and I play a lot of solo games. I do not use him regularly in any deck unless I am looking specifically for Ranged ability, and even then I usually use Legolas from the base set. The allies are good with the exception of Keen Eyed Took (so 3 good, 1 bad). Four of the remaining five player cards (events and attachments) are cards I never ever use.

My take on the encounter deck: This is a very extremely location heavy challenge. So, if you can handle that by using cards that clear locations (Northern Tracker in particular) it becomes quite easy. There are very few enemies and minimal combat. It is a unique change of pace compared to other encounter packs, but simply clearing locations is a bit bland, and it does not hold up interest after repeated plays. Note also there is a card in this encounter deck called "Rockslide" which is probably one of the most frustrating types of cards that can occur in any encounter deck (probably second to any card with "surge"). Rockslide can end a game in a hearbeat, even if you have planned well.

So, 2 out of 5 on this one. Many other encounter packs are much more worth your money.

Another interesting twist in the adventure packs for the Mirkwood series. Definitely need some good quest allies. Fun pack, not so many enemies, but the location threat could kill you! Don't get lost with Mr. Frodo!

Everything was great. All as expected on both the book and the delivery. I could not ask for more than that.
