Product Description

The definitive guide to the design of the movie, with over 500 illustrations.

With complete access to artwork created over a five-year period, this authoritative and insightful book illustrates the creative development of The Fellowship of the Ring. This official book contains over 500 exclusive images; from the earliest pencil sketches and conceptual drawings to magnificent paintings that shaped the look of the film.

Contributing artists include John Howe and Alan Lee; artists who have inspired Peter Jackson's vision of Middle-earth and worked with him to bring the trilogy to the big screen. Peter Jackson is among twelve contributors who explain the background to the images.

The book covers the opening sequence, locations, costumes, armoury and creatures. The artists who created all of these diverse elements explain how they contributed to the development of the film.

As well as the wealth of artwork there are also photographs showing the realisation of the creative process and some stills from the film.

In addition to considering all the elements that have made it into the film, this book also looks at fascinating ideas, proposals and posters that were, nonetheless, ultimately rejected.

Printed on high-quality art paper this lavish book is ideal for Tolkien collectors and film enthusiasts. It also makes a superb gift. Published to tie-in with the launch of the video and DVD, this is the first of three books in that will become a collectable set to accompany the film trilogy.

From the Publisher

The first in a series of 3 books chronicling the development of all 3 movies. This book investigates through words and pictures how and why the film looks as startingly innovative and exciting as it does, told by the very people who made it happen.

Superb- A must buy! 1 Jun 2003

If you are a lover of fine artwork or just a fan of the lord of the rings movie the this is an essential purchase.
One of the reasons the movie was such a big hit is the graphics and scenery in it. This book gives every detail about the graphics- all the landscapes- from rivendale to the shire, all the props- from gandalfs pipes to Aragorns sword and Gimli's armour, all of the Mordor and Isangaard army- from Orcs to the Cave troll and finally all of the outfits- from Arwen's dress to Saruman's cloak.
Not only are they all in the book, but it tells you everything you need to know, it gives you concept sketches, detailed sketches, models and even photos from the movies. A very nice touch is the comments from the art designers about progress and the final outcome.
Futhermore, it is all presented fantastically, so it is easy to flick through and easy to read.
Overall this book is very interesting at least and sensational at best. A brilliant book which anyone who remotely likes lord of the rings or artwork deserves to buy this book
