5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant little gem 31 Aug 2011
By ekb
Thank god for amazon's recommendations because without it I would have missed out on seeing this gem of a film. Starring the always excellent Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Chris Pratt a high school hockey star who had it all until a terrible car accident left him with brain damage. Jeff Daniel's is terrific as the blind roommate who dresses like Larry Flint and alway's has something smart to say. A perfect film in everyway with an awesome soundtrack and perfect performances from all the leads. Given the types of films currently on offer by Hollywood i.e sequels and reboots this is original and fresh but most importantly this is good, very good. Highly recommended, a total must see. You will not be dissapointed.

2013 and we all know Joseph Gordon-Levitt (JGL) and Matthew Goode are great stars but those luckily enough to come across this back in 2007 knew these guys were destined for great things. What we have is an interesting little indie noir featuring a main character suffering mental health issues. It's extremely well directed with some striking visuals that stay with you long after the credits role. Driving at night on a road lit by fireflies is something you can't forget seeing. The characters are great from the leads to the minor ones (though I felt Isla Fisher could have been given a bit more to do) and everyone leaves an impression. In terms of script the dialogue is strong but the plot is perhaps a little weak with not all of the twists quite working aswell as they should but not enough for the film to lose a star. The villain is excellent and is both captivating and terrifying.
The real highlight of this film though, the reason it is 5 star and needs to be hunted down and watched by everyone, is to do with the way it examines mental health. A lot of films mess things up when it looks at mental health usually because the writers are ignorant to mental health issues and just use it to make a character more sympathetic. JGL's character was in a car crash that has affected both his memory and mental processes. The film examines the way this can lead to feelings of anger, confusion and alienation. People interested in mental health should watch this film as it is rare that a movie examines mental health issues with so much understanding and respect. It is principally a thriller and it is exciting and gripping but it is the way it looks at living with mental health issues that make this film a must see. JGL's performance is perfect and brings a lot of empathy and subtly to the character.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brain Damaged Guy in Bank Heist Thriller. 12 Feb 2013
By Tommy D TOP 100 REVIEWER
This is another one of those films that slipped under the radar and I think deserves more attention. It stars the brilliantly versatile Joseph Gordon-Levitt (just made `Looper' and so many more great films) as Chris Pratt. He was a promising ice hockey player and then one night whilst out with his girl friend and two bestest mates, he totals his car killing the friends and badly injuring Kelly. He wakes up some time later and has suffered brain damage. He now can not do sequencing so needs to write things down in a note book, all the time. He sometimes forgets things, gets angry and swears and can find everyday tasks impossible to do.

He lives with his blind friend Lewis, (the always excellent Jeff Daniels also `Looper and my fave `Gettysburg') who is far more capable than Chris. He works as a night janitor at a country bank but his wealthy father still picks up the bills for major items. Chris just wants his old life back, but finds it hard to even open a can of tomatoes. Then as luck would have it he runs into a guy who was above him at school and he seems to really like him and even gets him to meet ex erotic dancer Luvlee Lemons (Isla Fisher who plays it with aplomb).

Soon he finds out why they are really interested in him and the title of the film is a bit of a clue. What we have here is an understated gem of a movie. It is a story of regret, failure, loss, love and realising what really matters in life and it is done in such a way that it all comes across as really believable. Alex Borstein appears as bank clerk Mrs Lange and `Family Guy' aficionados out there will know she is the voice of Lois Griffin, just a small part here though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film - well worth watching 11 Oct 2012
A great off-beat movie along the lines of A Simple Plan
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is excellent, as ever
If it starts a little slow - hang in there ...
