5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Story 4 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
"The Look" is a brilliant novel, classified as a children's book, which I would think would suit girls from around 12 years up, depending on their reading maturity.
The story opens with Ted (Edwina) and her sister Ava, busking on Carnaby Street in the West End of London. It is Ava's idea to get them some money. Ava is the outgoing, try anything girl and her younger sister Ted, is more cautious and not quite so wordly.
The story tells of the unexpected opportunity to follow every girls dream - to become a catwalk model. In tandem with this, is the illness of the other sister and how she and the family cope. The girls lives had already had one change. When their father lost his job, their home in Richmond-upon-Thames had to be let out, and the family moved into a rented flat above a shop in Putney.
"The Look" is an absorbing story which every girl will love. There are the ups and downs of family life, school life and the decisions that in growing up, these sisters have to make for themselves and for each other.
There are no "nasties" in the story for parents to worry about. It is a good read and a safe read. A book indeed, that as an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed and which (I know I have said this before!) would make a good short film for either the large or small screen.
I can highly recommend this book - It is brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Look" has "IT" 29 Jan 2012
By Book Addict TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
15 year old Ted (Edwina) has grown up idolising her glamorous Elizabeth Taylor-like older sister Ava and thinks herself somewhat of a freak with her caterpillar eyebrow(s), gangly height and awkward limbs. So when a man claiming to be a model scout approaches them Ted is astounded that he is interested in her and not Ava, and is convinced he is nothing more than a scam artist.

Yet soon Ted is set to take the fashion world by storm, but it never quite works out despite everyone telling her how marvellous she is. Add to this building disappointment Ava's diagnosis of cancer and her subsequent chemo and radiotherapy treatments. As Ted watches her carefree beautiful sister wilt, she takes supportive action. Yet the consequences of this fast track Ted's modelling career and have her making choices between staying with Ava or grasping at a major opportunity presenting itself in New York.

The is a cute story with surprising depths as Ted discovers what is really important to her and what she hopes to accomplish with her life. The different environments work well; the downgraded home following Dad losing his job, the hospital settings as Ava is diagnosed and starts her therapy, and the almost fantastical fashion world in which time is money and anything can be said or done to land the perfect shot for a campaign. Ted is immersed in an alien world and flounders somewhat, but when she has an idea or plan she sticks to it, even if she ends up threatened with court action. She is a likeable kind hearted young woman, and her development and increasing confidence throughout "The Look" (enhanced by her interactions with Ava, her class mates, fellow models and a potential love interest) is an interesting, entertaining, and at times touching journey of a potential supermodel who is presented with a life changing opportunity at the worst possible time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick witted and exciting 19 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The Look is a quick witted and excitingly written tale of a girl who is spotted by a modelling agency's talent scout -- against all her preconceptions -- at the same time that her elder sister is diagnosed with lymphoma, and has to begin a gruelling course of chemo- and radio-therapy. Ted (Edwina) has a fresh and engaging narrative voice which makes you instantly want to like her. In fact, Ted could tell pretty much any story and it would be interesting.

On the surface of it this is a rags to riches (and back again, to some extent) story, but it's the additional element of the terribly ill sister which lifts it above the run of the mill and makes it a tale worth telling. I spent most of the last year working in a children's hospital, and the story of elder sister Ava really resonated for me.

Although the writing is brilliant and this is a really enjoyable read, my feeling is that the plot lets it down in the final third. The climax isn't climactic and, what's worse, it's telegraphed beforehand and we pretty much guess what is going to happen. Somehow the emotional impact of the decisions late in the book doesn't work as well as the very detailed emotional work at the start. That, and the teenage dialogue falters in places, with things, especially the meaning of the word 'sick' having to be spelled out to the main character as if they were 30+, not 16.

All in all, this book isn't going to set the world alight, but it is a very good, compelling read which, once started, is hard to put down until it's finished.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warm and wholesome without being sentimental 1 April 2012
By Roman Clodia TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Ted is 15 and, at 5'11'', is gawky and nicknamed `freaky' by the kids at school - until she's spotted by a model scout in Covent Garden. Only her older sister Ava is diagnosed with cancer, her father's lost his job as a history lecturer and her mum is struggling - can Ted hold the family together?

I really loved this book. Ted is an adorable `every-girl' who is self-deprecating and individual. I loved that she's a bit geeky, that she admits that she's frightened by her sister's illness, and yet remains courageous and positive. The bond between the sisters is beautifully done, just abrasive enough to feel real yet full of a palpable love.

This could have been sugary sweet and sentimental but manages to avoid that - instead it is funny and positive, filled with a genuine tenderness and warmth. I highly recommend this for girls from about 12-13 upwards - and anyone else who enjoys a great uplifting story.
