Product Description

There are many reasons why I wanted to make The Look but they can all be subsumed under two words: Charlotte Rampling. Angelina Maccarone, director of The Look.

In this intellectual travelogue La Légende Charlotte Rampling muses with friends and colleagues on celebrity, age, desire and love. Rampling debates and cogitates with creative as diverse as photographers Peter Lindbergh and Juergen Teller and writer Paul Auster as she travels from Paris to New York. She converses in cafés and houseboats, and delves into the very essence of life, death and The Look.

Selected for the Cannes Classic stream at the 2011 Festival de Cannes, The Look is a beautifully shot documentary film full of contemplation and intrigue.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth sticking with for the classic film clips 7 May 2012
At first I feared I was in for 90 minutes' cliché-ridden, celebrity-type navel-gazing after the initial scenes with Peter Lindbergh and Paul Auster, but this documentary does improve and we gradually gain some insight into Charlotte Rampling's work. The scenes from 'Georgy Girl, 'Stardust Memories, 'Swimming Pool' and, in particular, 'Night Porter' are excellent. She has of course been in a few clinkers as well, and I could have done without the scenes from 'Max Mon Amour' and 'Heading South'.

It's a great shame that no room could be found for discussions and scenes of her work in 'Lemming' and 'Melancholia', two of her latter day films that saw her on really cruel form.

I did feel at the end, however, that, although I had learned a few things about her approaches to acting and fame, I still did not know too much about Rampling the woman and I think that, for this reason, the documentary has to go down as a missed opportunity.

Charlotte Rampling seems to get better with age, this documentary shows a great insight to most of her early and newer roles.
I would certainly recommend this to any of her many fans.
