Product Description

The Long Way - an endurance event in the land of the beautiful game.

Forewords by Richard Lee, Alan Dowson, Ian Selley & Martin Tyler

Every season, adults, who should know better, set out on wonderful journeys of discovery to reach the land of their childhood dreams on the hallowed turf of Wembley. On this quest, they travel up strands, following the winners, to strange grounds in extraordinary lands. Most fall by the wayside, but a lucky few reach their ultimate goal; to see the champions lift The FA Cup.

Having accidentally been sucked in to this murky world, The Long Way is a story of one man’s optimistic plan, and total obsession, to complete this pilgrimage the hard way. Avoiding well trodden paths, he resolved to tackle the climb to the summit by longest feasible route. The Long Way: an endurance event in the land of the beautiful game.

Influenced by a sport mad Grandfather, Ashley fell in love with football at an early age. Since then he’s travelled the world, seeking out new experiences and intimate sports stadia. Still waiting to score the winner in The FA Cup Final, his day job is something far nobler, but ultimately less exciting.

“Ashley's wonderful adventure sums up the enduring enchantment of The FA Cup.” Martin Tyler (Commentator)

One of the many good things about watching football is that you meet all sorts of pleasant and interesting people, and this certainly comes across in this book. There is a lot I can relate to: the fact that watching on television (as I normally do now) is not as good as the real thing; the balmy days of the early rounds contrasting with the bleak cold afternoons/evenings of later fixtures; and the more civilized and friendly attitudes you now get in new stadia, marred, unfortunately by over-the-top advertising. The author sums them up well: the homespun world of the non-league teams in the early rounds, the red-blooded traditions and passion epitomised by the Everton-Sunderland game, and the somewhat synthetic atmosphere of the new Wembley. I can see why he preferred Hendon v Kingstonian to the FA Cup semi-final earlier that day.

As with most good football books, this is not only about the games Mr Greb watched. He tells us about his journeys there, the stadia, the facilities and the fans. He might not fit everyone's (dated) stereotype of a football fan. He is obviously literate, educated and, it seems, not short of the odd bob. The word "mate" is not used, and if he did witness drunken, hostile behaviour, he omits it. Instead, his book sums up why The Beautiful Game remains just that.

I really enjoyed this book.
