If you've ever wondered why witches used to fly around on broomsticks and what it was that Santa Claus drank that made him launch into the air with his reindeer, then this book is a must. The Long Trip is a slightly revised and updated version of Devereux's original 1997 excursion into psychedelia's prehistory, as well as its ancient and recent history. The main message of this book is that psychedelic substances have been used the world over for millennia, not just recreationally but primarily for magico-spiritual and healing purposes, that is, as sacramental substances. Delving into aspects of archaeology many academics would choose to ignore, The Long Trip embarks on a journey to unearth the visionary past of our ancestors, leaving little doubt that for almost as long as human culture has been around, us humans have been using substances to alter our consciousness. High-ly recommended reading (For a complete review of this book see The Network Review: Journal of the Scientific and Medical Network, 102, 57-58.)

Another interesting book from Paul Deveraux. The shaman perspective gets plenty of mentions and the book is perhaps prone to leaps of faith when connecting artefacts from the distant past to customs that they may have been associated with.
But given the profound effects of the entheogens and their inevitable impact on the consciousness of early mankind this book may even understate the history-changing role of the psychedelics.
It's an interesting point that the 'modern' period may be the first one where psychedelics have not had a central place in the cultural life of society.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I feel a great admiration for people like Paul who don't just talk about such subjects, but dedicate a great deal of their lives researching them; subjects that are more often than not considered to be nonsense. Without going into a big diatribe about Science being the religion of the day, it's great to have access to such fascinating and honest material.
I particularly enjoyed reading, and felt a huge empathy with the narrative about being a flower. For me it was another human, but I think the experience was probably not really any different...

Recommended.
